Review of Fairmont Orchid
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Jun 2017via mobile
Came to the big island for our anniversary with our 6 year old. When reaching the hotel, Everyone was really nice and relaxed. Rooms are super clean. I was worried about activities here with the six-year-old, but lots to do at the Lagoon! Even my wife got into the water activities which I did not expect! If you're staying more than a few days, pay the activities fee at the lagoon and you can use their kayaks, snorkels, etc the whole time. I can't say enough good things about the deli by the pool. Great coffee, delicious breakfast, great service and reasonable prices. You can be fancier and eat at the other restaurants there with the scenic views; just plan how much you want to spend and look at the menu first from their website. We're spending about five days here so one meal to enjoy our anniversary in a beautiful setting listening to the artist with the guitar is worth it. Like any trip just plan ahead. Would come back again!

Our family just returned from a week at the Fairmont Orchid. It was a beautiful resort and very relaxing. This resort offered the atmosphere that we seek in a Hawaiian resort (for reference, our previous stays include the Four Seasons, Hyatt, & Fairmont Kea Lani on Maui and the Hyatt on Kauai). A corporate event made the resort feel a bit more crowded for a couple of days but otherwise we found it very easy to find seating at the pool and beach. The beach is not very big but we enjoyed it and it is excellent for young kids. There is a reef surrounding the swimming area so the kids can swim in calm waters without worrying about big waves. Our family enjoyed snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking every day. The snorkeling was really great - we saw lots of colorful fish, eels and an occasional turtle. We loved seeing the honu (green sea turtles) resting in a protected area on the beach. After sunset, we saw a huge manta ray swimming by the shore. As a family of 5, we usually stay in suites and the 1 bedroom suite at the Orchid was very comfortable for our family. We found it to be very spacious and it was great to have 1 1/2 bathrooms. We enjoyed the dining at the resort as well as at nearby restaurants. We made a few dining reservations before we arrived but found that it really wasn't difficult to get last minute reservations (there are many great fine dining options in the area). The service at the beach, pool, restaurants & valet (only $5/day) were great. The only complaint about our stay (not related to the resort) is that there is no convenient laundry service nearby. We took our laundry to a store in Kona where they washed/folded everything for us. It was great and very inexpensive but about a 45 minute drive away. Overall, we had an excellent stay at the Fairmont Orchid and we can't wait to return!

Nice hotel, large but felt intimate. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Had a great suite, could sit on the balcony and watch the whales in the distance. Need a car if you want to do more than just relax locally.

This hotel is very elegant with wonderful public areas and grounds. Even the elevators have rich wood paneling and crystal chandeliers. The staff is extremely friendly, and the palm lined oceanfront is spectacular. It's a very classy, upscale hotel in a beautiful setting. The food and service were very good for both dinner and breakfast.

This hotel is a long way from town, but there are several nearby hotels as well as Waikaloa Village which are closer if you want to go shopping or find other dining options. There is a lot of lava rock on the beaches on this part of the Big Island, so ocean swimming is best in the cove at the resort. Even there, you need to be a bit careful as the rocks are sharp. However, the cove is a beautiful spot. Finally, the hotel has tile in the rooms rather than carpeting. This is practical for a beach resort, but it lacks the luxury feel that one would expect from a hotel of this caliber. Nevertheless, this is a really attractive and comfortable resort and I would be happy to return.

I had a lovely time here watching our friends run in the Ironman 70.3. The facilities are clean and beautiful. Unfortunately every drink is like $16 and they gouge you at every turn. I think next time I will chose a smaller hotel for more of that 1960's Hawaii feel.

We stayed for a girls weekend trip and the guest experience is world class! From the moment we drove up to the entrance, we were greeted by the friendly bell and valet staff. At check-in, Mayrose and Efrelyn were amazing! They made us feel welcomed and Mayrose escorted us to our room, which was gorgeous. The front desk was so kind to upgrade us and they were the reason our girls weekend trip was so wonderful. Talk about world class customer service! Everyone on property from the front office team, pool staff, club lounge team, and housekeeping were simply fabulous. Would definitely recommend anyone traveling to the Big Island to stay here.
