Just a Little Above Average Experience

Review of Fairmont Orchid
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 May 2014
My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights in April 2014. It was our first Fairmont Experience. Based on the "flair" of getting my membership kit upon becoming a Fairmont Premier cardholder, I had very high expectations from this hotel. Before choosing to stay at Fairmont Orchid, I also looked at other hotels that I really wanted to experience such as The Empress Hotel in Canada, The Chateau in Lake Louise, and The Fairmont Olympic in Seattle. Prior to our experience with the Fairmont Orchid, my husband and I have been to excellent hotels so this experience has got our highest expectations.

Needless to say, my expectations were only half met. The hotel has excellent grounds, it's huge and there are lots of areas to explore. The waterfall that's also utilized for the Spa Without Walls is an excellent use of the area. The huge ground and the Golf course provided a very good opportunity to use my Fairmont Fit Apparel for some walking and exercise as well as playing golf!

When it came to food, my husband and I agreed that breakfast was the only meal we really enjoyed. The Orchid Court is a buffet with lots of choices whether it's Asian, Continental, or full breakfast, they got it. Dinner at Norio's, however, was another story. The receptionist was a young girl who was not very friendly as my husband and I didn't have reservation. So we waited for 15 minutes before we got seated when there really wasn't anything going on, and since this lady knew what to expect for dinner that night and how many people had dinner reservations, why she couldn't seat us was a mystery to us. By the way, that night, the place was not full! To make our experience worse, my husband's steak was not even a 2-star hotel quality.

It's a good thing that there was an excellent waitress who knew what we went through and helped make our experience better. She was very attentive and had a very positive attitude. The manager came to visit with us later that night, and after learning of our plight, he deducted the price of the steak from our bill. By the way, the manager saw the cut of the meat that was served that my husband ate anyway.

The layout of the hotel was excellent, the pool was huge and there's enough corners and areas to have a little privacy. Early morning pool time was the best as it was not crowded. The beach is interesting in that there's a lot of lava rocks around and if you are not careful, you could cut yourself.

When it came to customer service, we have mix ratings. The breakfast crew were awesome. The dinner wait staff were great, the hostess being the exception, she acted like she was new to her job. The cleaning staff were always friendly and helpful. The folks at the front desk were very professional, as expected, but the guys in front of the hotel were a little bit unhelpful. They were focused on telling us what we could not do as opposed to helping us how to do what we wanted to do.

My husband and I have had excellent experience with the Sheraton Hotel at Black Rock in Maui and The Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Oahu. In comparison, I'm sorry to say that our experience with The Fairmont Orchid in Hawaii was not very impressive.

The feeling of Ohana greeted us as we arrived to the Fairmont Orchid. The Fairmont location provided us with spectacular sunsets every night. The partial view of the ocean and the spectacular grounds were enjoyed every day from the amble balcony. The room was appointed well and the bed was heavenly!
Our favorite place to unwind was the Luana Lounge, the staff were always engaging and happy to share stories and their favorite haunts on the island.

I have stayed at the Fairmont several times now. I love going to their spa after the beach, you can use the steam and sauna facilities and shower and change right at the spa. Brown's Beach Deli has the best smoothies ever. This is my choice for girls' weekend in Kohala (we live in Hilo).

The building itself is a bit run down and I prefer the clean mid-century modern aesthetic at the Mauna Kea. But that spa is a gem and the hotel is still very nice, if showing its age a bit.

What a wonderful resort. Excellent service, 5 star food, amazing location and wonderful amenities. The grounds are relaxing, romantic and well cared for. This resort exceeded my expectations and my husband's. After reading the reviews on trip advisor prior to our trip, I must say I was a bit worried by some. However, I will tell you there was not one unfriendly staff member that we encountered. Even the gardener's stopped to say Aloha. We had Janine as our sever the first day of our vacation. She was warm, friendly and took the time to get to know us. 7 days later she was our server again and she immediately remembered us and the details of our visit. The events that were held during our visit had ZERO impact on any of the vacationing guest amenities. At one time I believe there was a group of over 400. The bars/restaurants still had plenty of seats, the beach was still full of beach chairs and equipment and the staff still superior and consistently attentive. The special events were all held in areas that didn't impact our access or enjoyment of the beautiful resort. It also didn't take away from the our experience which was both romantic and relaxing. Oh, and I loved the turn down service. You walk into your room and they have a card with recommendations of activities for the next day, water and the TV on the Hawaii channel, which sounds strange but very relaxing.

Tips: If you're planning to explore visit the concierge first. We went on two excellent trips -The Manta ray snorkel is a MUST as is the snorkel trip. Both were with Fairwinds and they were EXCELLENT. Purchase the $75 activity pass for the beach. We never waited for equipment and it was worth every penny. If you want to stay on property and would like to save some money go for a lighter dinner. The Luana Lounge has 1/2 off Pupu's which are outstanding and nice portions from 8-10pm every night. Take the shuttle to Tommy Bahama's Cafe for Happy Hour from 4-6 everyday. Great food and excellent drinks.

This trip was for my 40/41st birthday and the first vacation my husband and I have taken without children in 5 years. It was perfect in every way. The Orchid is a tranquil romantic resort with a 5 star staff that made sure that we had an amazing experience. One of the best places we have ever stayed! We can't wait to return.

Room tip: We had the deluxe Ocean View - Wonderful I would say that there probably isn't a bad room in the entire resort.

Staffs have lost passion and friendliness, very disappointed with "service" if any received. We booked a suite and it was like sleeping in an aircraft, AC vent is inside of master bedroom and unable to adjust sounds.

Our highly anticipated 3 night stay here was precluded by a 7 night stay in fun, but busy and noisy Waikiki. We booked here looking for peace, quiet and relaxation prior to returning home. Our initial impressions were most favorable. We were greeted with kokui nut leis upon arrival. Our luggage was promptly whisked away and our car was taken to be parked by valet. I was warmly greeted at the front desk as a Presidents Club member. My room was not ready, but was told that if we could wait, it would be ready in just a few minutes.

As promised, after waiting just a few minutes and viewing the beautiful grounds off of the lobby, the front desk manager introduced himself, welcomed us to the property and assured us that if we need anything, to just let them know and it would be taken care of. He introduced us to Paul, our bellhop. With our luggage in tow, he gave us a lovely explanation of the property, the restaurants, bars and all details that we should be aware of during our stay. I must say that this was probably the finest introduction to a resort property that I have ever received and that Paul is to be commended!

Our Garden View room was roomy and the balcony had a slight ocean view if you stretched your view to the right. The room was comfortable and for the most part clean, with the exception of some questionable stains on the bed apron which grossed out my wife. Little did I know that this is probably the worst room that we could have been placed in.

Let it be said that the grounds of the resort are unbelievable. They are spacious and lush with manicured beautiful gardens that are painstakingly raked and groomed daily by the gardeners. Numerous waterfalls are spread out amongst the property with more tiki torches and tall palm trees in one place than I have ever seen. The pool is spacious, however the pool deck is in need of repair and crumbling away. The lagoon to the side of the property and sandy beach is most beautiful and I enjoyed snorkeling with the fish and turtles on two occassions. In walking amongst the grounds of the property, I mentioned to my wife, that "this is what heaven must be like!".

With the exception of just one person, everyone that we came into contact with at the property was most pleasant, talkative, friendly and helpful. I wish that I could end my review here, as my rating would be 4 or 5 stars.

Unfortunately our second night of the stay was a complete disaster.

Preparing for dinner, a letter appeared under our door. It informed us of an emergency plumbing situation. It assured us that our water service would not be interrupted, but "for a few guests there may be some noise issues".

Now first of all, let it be said that I was not upset about the plumbing problem. I know that things happen and that is something that is almost uncontrollable. What did upset me was with how this situation was handled by the front desk and management.

Upon returning from dinner, we were horrified to find that the plumbing problem was directly oustide of our overlooking lanai. Working feverishly were two septic tank removal trucks, pumps and workers vaccuuming away all of the sewage of our resort. The noise increased as the night went on until 12:30 am, when we just could not stand it anymore. Now please, we are not prudes, but this is not what we had envisioned when we booked here looking for quiet, peace and relaxation. What happened next is inexcusable for any hotel, not to mention this, supposedly a 5 star AAA hotel. Wondering if we could possibly be relocated to another room, or even just wondering for how long the noise would last, I called down to the front desk. I let the phone ring, and ring and ring... no answer. Assuming that I had hit the wrong button, I tried again. Once again, no answer. I tried to call the concierge, and again, no answer there. For a hotel to make all of the promises that they did, and then not to even answer my call is inexcusable.

The next morning I went down to the front desk to express my dissatisfaction. I was told that I needed to speak to the front desk manager. Ursila came out and introduced herself. I explained to her the details of last night and expressed my dissatisfaction with the situation and the fact that my calls for assistance the previous night were not answered. Ursila was aware of the problem and said that I was not the only guest to have complaints. She was hoping that the issue would be resolved today, but said that she would reserve a room for me in the other wing if the issue is not corrected. I told her that is fine, but what about last night? I told her that I would like to be reimbursed for last night. Our rest was compromised and that we certainly were unable to use our lanai for the evening. Ursila informed me that managment is having a meeting that morning to discuss the situation and to decide what remediation might be made. She asked for my cell phone number and said that she would call as soon as a decision is made.

After spending some time at the pool, I notice a message had been left on my cell phone. Listening to my message, I had to listen to it a second time to comprehend what the decision had been. Ursila did call. Her message was "the situation has been resolved. All of the trucks will be leaving soon and they apologize for the inconvenience." That was it! No mention of being reimbursed for the night, not even a partial credit, a room upgrade or maybe even a discount off of dinner. Nothing.

I am in the client relationship business. Whenever a client is wronged, you to try to make it right. You try to smooth things over. Any attempt by them to acknowledge the situation and to try win me back was never attempted. In my mind this was a gross error in guest relations and needs to be brought to the attention of anyone considering staying at this property.

Yes, this is a beautiful property. 99% of the employees that we encountered were wonderful, but it takes just one bad apple to spoil the entire bushel.

There is a lot of competition in high end resorts, especially on the West Coast of this island. It is safe to say that I will never return here because of the very bad taste that remains in my mouth.

Aloha, and thank you very much for posting your review.

We are certainly pleased by your many nice compliments about our service and facilities despite the unfortunate turn of events that occurred on the second night of your stay. We appreciate your understanding that this was an unavoidable situation, and agree that it could and should have been handled more professional and with a much higher level of concern for your comfort. I assure you that this failure on our part is not the norm, and we absolutely strive to provide the highest level of service to all of our guests. Thank you for allowing us to further follow-up on this situation with you privately. Should your travels bring you back to Hawaii Island, we hope to have an opportunity to welcome you back and provide you with a more positive overall experience.
