“Great zoo, animals well cared for”

Joya Grande Zoo y Eco Parque
Reviewed 2 August 2015

I'm not a zoo person, I'm not a fan of animals in captivity. That said, the animals looked healthy, some of the pens were a little small, but overall good. The staff was friendly and helpful, the zoo clean. If you don't ride the bus thing around, be prepared to walk: wear sunscreen, have lots of water. The road to the zoo's a bit rough, so be warned. They offer cabins where you can stay, the ones I saw overlook the park, so would probably be very nice at night. My 10 and 15 year old Honduran daughters LOVED this place, so great for kids. They also have a pizza place that makes it while you wait: it's decent pizza, a bit slow to get, but very affordable and they have shaded tables.

Well, the story goes that this zoo belonged to some drug lords, the government took it from them and they kept it open as per the people request, the charge is pretty cheap and you pay in Honduras money.

If you're are in San Pedro Sula, it's like an hour and a half away, once you get off the highway the road becomes a little rough, you'll love the view and the people that live around it. Go comfortable and bring water, you'll be doing a lot of walking.

Now, the animals here you'll only see them on TV or in this zoo, I mean they have animals that you only see at the Zahara, , Africa, Rocky Mountains, really exotic animals, like the white tiger, camels (at least 3 different types), hippopotamus, zebras, giraffes, tigers, lions, buffalo, dear, wilder beast, Pony Horses, Lots of Macaw with different colors and sizes, Peacocks walking around and in trees, panthers, cougars, I mean a lot of different and exotic animals.

Let me start by saying this is NOT like any American zoo you've been too, it's way better. The animals are very well taken care of. You can get so much closer to them here. The landscape is so pretty. The pool looked amazing. Hoping to go back soon and stay in one of the cabins and then spend the day looking around, swimming, playing and eating.

Great place, giraffe, tigers and lions take the show away, especially since you can feed the giraffe, and we were lucky to be when tigers and lions were being fed.
There are many other animals too, including camels, kangaroos, monkeys, hippopotamus, etc.

Only downside was restaurant, bad service and no variety.

No doubt about it, the best zoo in our country. It is a litte bit far from highway and the city of San Pedro Sula but it is the best option for the familiy. If you are a foreign visitor please carry cash only, credit cards are no accepted. It is not a zoo like in the US but you can have a good time there in a sunny day. Their restaurante is a little limited in food but it is worth the cost.
