Stunning views. Wonderful rooms - if you get a refurbished one. Poor food.

the hotel cristina is a beautiful hotel has all the usual amenities, good food, fabulous views, clean rooms and pleasant staff but... beware... our room was robbed. the door was locked when we left the room and locked when we came back yet 400 euros disappeared from our room. on telling the manager he was unhelpful to say the very least. 'could not be a member of staff' he said. he told us he has informed the local police but we found he had not (details i wont go into). i would advise everyone to be very attentive. another room was robbed on 15 september the same day as us and they lost 500 euros. all this would you believe and the manager did not inform the police. i have been travelling to italy for 40 years and this is my worst experience,,,, not just losing the money but the manager being so obstructive and unhelpful. i shall be taking the matter further as the manager was simply appalling. there is no doubt in my mind it was a member of staff yet he would not entertain this idea. the rest of the holdiay and hotel was fabulous but as one might imagine this episode marred the whole holiday.

Room Tip: choose a room with a card to open the door and not a key and ask for a room with a proper safe not o...

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Hotel Cristina in September and booked via Newmarket Travel flying to Verona with Tor Airlines from Durham Tees Valley airport. Our transfer to Hotel Cristina could have been managed a lot better as we were dropped of at the seafront marina car park and had to wait while the small hotel minibus relayed us to the hotel. I could have understood if the roads were not suitable for the coaches but they were! We were greeted at reception in a friendly and courteous manner and given the keys to room 305. The staff showed us how to reach the apartment via lift and stairs. The layout of the hotel complex is not straightforward and requires you to have a good walk around to appreciate the hotels surroundings and different floor levels. Our room had a shared terrace/balcony view overlooking the Lake. Unfortunately this was the only positive aspect of the twin bedded room. The room was very tired and scruffy looking and the beds had seen better days (or should that be nights). The carpet was stained and the walls bore scrape marks. As we prefer double beds I returned to reception and asked if it was possible to change to a room with a double bed. To their credit another room was promptly arranged (room 227) and although it did not have a balcony view it was larger, cleaner with a small isolated terrace. The pools are well maintained and very clean with plenty of sun loungers. N.B You need to obtain beach towels from reception along with the safe key for your room. This is free but a deposit of 40 euros is required. WARNING:- PLEASE USE THE SAFE as during our stay a British couple were burgled whereby they had over 400 euros stolen. I heard from this same lady that 2 other German couples were burgled on the same day. The lady's room was not forced with the apartment being locked upon her return. The money was apparently well hidden with the thief leaving enough cash behind to look as if nothing was missing! Jewellery and other identifiable valuables were ignored. You don't need to be a rocket scientist but obviously this would suggest a member of staff is responsible. This was apparently refuted by the hotels manager who also failed to report it to police!!!

The food in the restaurant is average and acceptable but not over appealing. There was plenty of choice at evening meals with free wine. The salad bar is ample with interesting dessert choices. Compliments must be paid to the staff who ensure the tables are clean and prepared for the next guests. At breakfast there is an array of cereals, fresh fruit, eggs and bread. One groan is that the toaster is inadequate for the job of toasting the slices of bread. It is not hot enough and one requires to pass the bread through at least 2 or even 3 times which inevitably leads to queues forming. So the message to the management and staff is invest in a toaster adequate for the job and buy at least 2 please!

The bar prices at the hotel are expensive with wine starting from 15 euros upwards and beer at 4 to 5 euros a pint. Apart from Prosecco you cannot purchase wine by the glass so my advice would be to pop along to the supermarket and buy good wine for a fiver or less (Excellent Valpolicella at £4) But please remember to take a corkscrew with you as I was denied the loan of one by the hotel bar staff and was told it would cost 10 Euro to purchase one. I therefore reluctantly bought one and was handed a used one from behind the bar!!!! This is totally unacceptable but apparently common practice (thank goodness the wine was nice)

The evening entertainment is poor to average and on one particular evening a young female was singing and playing at the piano. It was not until I was waiting at the bar situated directly behind her when I noticed she was not actually playing the instrument but pretending with the keys electronically being played!!

As in previous reviews there are some excellent restaurants in Limone and in particular a good pizza one around the corner from the hotel, Tovo Pizzeria which is run by 'mamma' and her sons. Once you have orientated yourself one can walk into Limone town centre in just over 15 minutes via the steps.

Overall I would recommend the hotel but mainly for the vantage point and the views, but if your not used to walking or infirm then it may not be suitable for you. Feel free to forward any questions which I will be pleased to answer

We only managed to stay for a week at the Cristina and our experience was a positive one, but Limone itself is a place we fell in love with (and the people of course)
Hotel very clean, with friendly staff and decent food if you don't want to go out and about. For us as I said in the title, it was a base.
Rooms are basic, but clean, tidy and functional, all we saw with view over the lake.
Food is decent and perfectly acceptable, but please, please, please don't just eat at the hotel. Venture down into Limone and try any one of restaurants you can find down the hundreds of alleyways... Brilliant to get lost and then find a treasure of a place for a cold beer and some food..
Lots of steps around the hotel, but it is built into the hillside so it was expected.
Our first choice rep was a Local beauty called Tatziana and she was excellent... Loves her home town of Limone and is happy to tell you anything you want to know about the area. A pleasant change to find a rep with enthusiasm.
Hotel pool was nice and clean with plenty of sunbeds but there is a big lake to swim in guys... go on... embrace the moment.
All in all, Loved our break and could find no problems with the hotel, but I suppose if you look hard enough and are determined, then you will find something to complain about.
Should you have any questions about our stay please feel free to message me and I will be happy to reply

Rooms 52 and 52 Villa Orchidea .Last visited this hotel 4 years ago in 2007. Some improvements since then, especially the entertainment being moved to the higher swimming pool (the place where you get tea and cake at 4pm). Dinner and breakfast still exceptional and some of the staff are still there from 4 years ago which generally means a happy place to work. Enjoyed the holiday overall although despite the price - my advice is to resist the temptation to pay the hotel directly like we did. (If you want to know how much we paid please contact me personally and I'll let you know.) If you can, use an agency of some sort.
We had the second best rooms in the hotel. 52- There were drawer handles missing and there were visible wires in the bathroom, so I would describe the room as "tired" 53 seemed a little better but still needs updating. Both rooms had small portable Grundig CRT TVs.
I wouldn't let yourself be put off by the negatives as, despite my size, we still managed to make it up the hill to the hotel after a day or night out. Buy your lunch, beer and wine from the local Despar down the hill turn left and keep going and it's on your left. Save yourself a small fortune!
Went on the trip around the lake (sort this out yourself in the new port directly with the boat company- If you like Roman Ruins, Sirmione is a must. A villa to rival the Palatine Hill in Rome-), The Dolomites and Florence.
Verona has a Roman Arena still in use today for Operas etc. and is well worth the visit.
If you like self service "all you can eat dinners and breakfasts" this is the place for you. If you like fantastic views across a lake then this is the place for you. If you like good service this is the place for you.
On balance we enjoyed the hotel very much and will definitely return but have learned a big lesson this time which I won't be repeating in a hurry.
