There are moments, and then there are Chhatra Sagar moments. Sigh.......

For anyone who knows this, enough said. For anyone who doesn't, you should, so may I suggest getting a wiggle on and getting your bottoms down there/up there/across there asap.

Nine sublime tents, looking over the dam, on the far bank, nilghai, black storks and wild boar, and a whole plethora of bird life go about their business. Tranquility abounds, delicious food, perhaps a chilled beer or two, a snooze in a planters chair, a stroll around the village, sundowners, camp fires, like I said, sigh........ The India most don't see but definitely should.

After spending magical but manic days traveling around Dehli, Agra and Johdpur this hotel was a fantastic sanctuary of peace and beauty. The hosts were wonderful, the service was outstanding and the food was delicious. The photos do not do the views from the rooms justice- each beautifully designed tent directly overlooks a stunning lake surrounded by wildlife. The highlight of the trip was a village tour accompanied by the owner of the hotel who was loved by the village- if you visit you should absolutely go if you have the chance. I could not recommend this hotel more!

Room Tip: Go to on the tour! All of the rooms have amazing views! Spend 2 nights!

A lovely place to have a break between seeing the intense madness of Jaipur and other cities. You stay in the most luxurious tents on top of a dam. There are fantastic views of the countryside and lake. The place is run by bird enthusiasts, so you can join them on a walk around the countryside. They provide binoculars, but I did get told off for looking at deer instead of birds.

We had been walking for an hour or more, then as the sun began to set we turned a corner and LOOK! Trestle tables serving gin and tonics and nibbles.

Wonderful food and a lovely place to stay. Although you're in a tent you have an en suite bathroom. Apparently there is also wifi near reception - but who wants wifi at a place like this?

Our night’s stay here was our one splurge during our 14 day budget trip but having discovered Chhatra Sagar’s website, I knew it would be special, and it didn’t disappoint in any way. The setting is mesmerising; the tents with their simple yet opulent décor, super comfy beds and superb bathrooms rivalled any first class hotel; wonderful touches like the rose petal strewn bathroom and hotties tucked into the bed at night were gorgeous; the food was delectable; the service immaculate and discreet with nothing being too much trouble. And a blessing for us is that tipping is not allowed, something that troubled us throughout our trip as we had no idea what was appropriate. But the setting and surroundings are what moved us most. Our sunset was replaced by sheet and forked lightening, thunder, a strong wind and lashing rain which we watched from the covered terrace outside our tent, happily sipping gin and tonics which seemed to appear from nowhere. A glorious day dawned and the dam was replenished for the wildlife which a few years ago included a leopard, and our visit to the farm and village was possible. Unmissable! Great Great Grandfather, who conceived and built the dam would have been proud that again Chhatra Sagar is used as it was in his time. His descendants, two GG Grandsons and their cousin all play a pivotal role in the well deserved accolades, and are charming hosts. Do stay here if you have the chance. It must rank as one of the best ‘hotels’ in the world. Our memories of this special place will remain with us forever.

Room Tip: All the tents are superb, most situated on the wall of the dam, another 2 further up.
