“Fascinating!”

Reviewed 24 February 2018 via mobile

We have visited many temples and pagodas during our holiday in Asia and this one is quite different. Lots of groupings of different brightly painted statues over a big area. Worth stopping and looking for 15 minutes.

I've passed Wat Pa Kham Hua Chang Temple many times when travelling between Kranuan and Khon Kaen. Eventually, my partner and I visited decided to visit the temple at around 7am on a Sunday morning. She's lived in the area for almost 20 years but had never visited before.
There were plenty of visitors there already, many with children and almost all with the intention of praying and making merit.
So many statues to see and totally uncountable - there must be tens of thousands now, including a Transformer, the Incredible Hulk and Superman.
They're building a new (massive) temple there at the moment so part of the location is a building site. There were a few monks around but mainly towards the rear of the property.
You can buy Thai food and drinks including water and the prices are very reasonable. Somewhere to spend an hour or two and very interesting.

We went in early afternoon, the place was deserted due to the 35C temperature. Lots of elephants scattered all over the place some in organized fashion some that were just thrown in.. There are no Buddhist monks available on the premise. There is a small prayer << room >>. The only shopping you can do is buying elephants statues as good luck charm. The site is a good attraction for the kids ans it s free.

Yes thousands of elephants sculptures of all sizes and shapes with zebras, birds and fish. The elephants are randomly arranged in groups at base of trees on rocks.
Should you be a phographer the possibilities are limitless. Bring good walking shoes and plenty of fluid. Avoid hot days since most of it is in the open. Thai comes to see and pray. A good family activites kids will enjoy..

About 20 kilometers outside of Khon Kaen is a temple simply simply loaded with elephant statues. I challenge anyone to attempt to count them. At the front of the temple is a small shrine where one can make one's needs known to on high. According to Thai friends, many come to this temple to pray for a child. Once a prayer is answered, the couple will bring one or two elephants to add to the possible thousands already on the temple grounds.
There are other little statues there as well. Some that caught my eye were little policemen presumably paying homage. This is a fascinating place with enormous life size elephant statue families as well as miniatures and everything in between. There is a four faced Buddha statue as well as others on the grounds, and a small zoo of sorts.
If anyone thinks all temples are the same, this one will prove you wrong. Intriguing!
