Airão was a very wealthy city some decades ago, but with the rubber crisis it got abandoned. Fortunately a japanese heremit is maintaining our history alive. A must go place if you're around.

This was a very interesting site. It was fascinating to imagine how the city looked 150 years ago in its opulent prime - a very wealthy trading settlement in the middle of the jungle. It's also very interesting to see how quickly the jungle can take back any efforts humans make to "tame" it. The museum part was closed as the caretaker was away during the holidays. I can imagine that the photos there would only enhance the experience. This place is only accessible by boat and is at least a 2 hour ride from Novo Airão.
