After reading some very good reviews about this restaurant we decided to make a beeline for it on our visit to El Hierro this week. We checked online and it was open, apparently, great! What a disaster! The first day we tried it the place was closed, a Tuesday. Not to be daunted we returned the following evening when locals assured us it would be open. Again it was closed and several other prospective clients were waiting outside. Suddenly the owner appeared and explained that there was a private party down the road which they were catering for, therefore the restaurant was again closed. He promised that we could return the following day, Thursday, and we would be served. We tried phoning several times during the day but got no reply so as we had been assured of dinner we decided to just turn up. Guess what...the next day it was once again closed with a note on the door this time telling hungry would- be customers that due to a technical problem in the kitchen, the restaurant was closed for three days. Strangely, not the same story as yesterday. Frustrated and hungry we gave up, but after speaking to some locals, including the police we learned that this situation was not unusual. I can't comment on the food as we never saw any but I would say don't count on this place as a professionally functioning restaurant, the attitude was casual to say the least.

This guy, (David), is a genius. Doesn't speak English but speaks (with his body and enthusiasm) any language you like. Serves meals you never imagined, some of them you don't want to look at. (There is a black one you feel like you never want to touch. But once you touch it, you don't want to let go. Best his cheese and honey paella, backed, like all of his dishes, in that amazing wood burning oven that fills the entire restaurant with smokes up (when there is not enough ventilation). But don't complain, your (required) change of laundry is certainly worth the meal. Don't complain about the jazz music from his get blaster either .... he needs it to come up with these wonderful dishes. Enjoy, ... like I (and Gerdi) did and intend to do for the rest of our lives, certainly whenever we are on the island. And who can stay away from that island?

Stumbled upon this place as was staying down the road, and is the best meal we've had on El Hierro (so far).
Very friendly service, accommodating us having a baby and buggy and not speaking Spanish. Food and wine delicious. Small candlelit table area with lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Tasty food. Friendly and concerned staff. We enjoyed our evening.
The menu is written down on a board, which was a bit hard for us to use with Google translate (we don't speak Spanish). The owner is not speaking English very well. He tried in his best English (and we tried to understand in our best Spanish) to find it what we wanted: no fish, no seafood. He proposed something with chicken and cow. That turned out to be very good (the best yet!) baked cheese, three kinds, as a starter and tortilla's with chicken and cow as a main dish. It was more than we could eat and very delicious. The serving crew worked very hard (on his own for 12 people) to get everything on the table. Very friendly. Also the background music, candles, wood fire and small number of tables made this a nice place to be. Not the cheapest on the island, but that was no problem for me. I would really recommend going here.

Mom and Pop 12 seater restaurant.
Wood oven cooked wonder menu,

Firstly, book, we saw least 5 couples/families turned away. It looks weird and basic but is the best food on the island.

Great choice of food on a simple, local and original menu.
Beer choice for me was perfect and the local organic wine was so fresh, almost made for the menu.

With so much choice go again and again.
