“Average tea rooms”
Reviewed 17 April 2012

We went for afternoon tea in the tea rooms. The sandwiches were dry and completely lacklustre, the bread was far too thick for the minimal filling, but the scones and pastries were lovely. An additional pot of tea cost €7.50 which in my opinion is scandalous. There was also no staff in the tea rooms; the receptionist called a waitress to take our initial order but it was a lot of effort to get a second pot of tea as there were no visible staff. The tea rooms themselves could also do with a bit of a touch up - a bit too shabby to be chic.

Spent one night here prior to flying home from Dublin airport and you could not wish for a better place for a night’s pampering before returning to home and work! We arrived in the afternoon and enjoyed tea and scones in our room which was spacious and comfortable, although Irish hotels don’t seem to do in for cushions very much – one or two to soften up the chairs would have been perfect.

We tried to use their internet service but couldn’t get it to work, but a member of staff kindly looked us up a couple of phone numbers.

Dinner was fabulous – very long and drawn out, it included a delicious complementary appetiser and a sorbet between courses then a long wait for the main course, I presume because they were pretty busy, but it was all very good and we finished off our wine by a roaring fire in the bar.

Breakfast was good with plenty of fresh fruit, smoked salmon etc as well as cooked options.

The hotel is partly very old, partly more modern but sympathetically done and very spacious and comfortable – the sun was pouring into the conservatory (just as well as I had failed to locate the hairdryer in the depths of the wardrobe!) where we sat with the papers after breakfast and the gardens looked lovely.

The staff were very good – helpful, professional and friendly and I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone needing a place to stay within easy travelling distance of Dublin airport.

Stayed here in April for one night with my partner and we were so disappointed with everything, our room, facilities, staff, food etc. I expected so much more for the 200plus euros we paid for our room. Staff were unfriendly, not interested in listening to what you had to say, more interested in getting you out more like. Breakfast was very poor, food was not freshly cooked. Please do not waste your money by going to this 'castle' - staff must be living in the clouds if they think they are providing a luxurious experience, total waste of money, 100% do not recommend to anyone. There are much nicer hotels in Ireland that provide better value, best avoid this one.

Stayed for one night recently and my overall experience was poor. Room was okay, clean and tidy etc but there was no tea / coffee facilities and my girlfriend had to ask for a shower cap as one was not provided. Considering it was a premier room I'd hate to see what a standard room was like! Upon arrival it was stressed to us that breakfast finished at 9.45am and checkout was 11.30am - this was the earliest on both counts I have encountered at a hotel anywhere in the world! Breakfast was poor, described as a freshly cooked irish breakfast and was most certainly not. The egg, rashers and sauages had the look of and taste of sitting under hot lights. Staff were rude and unfriendly, they did not want to know if you'd any issue and didn't want to deal with guests problems at all. Myself and my girlfiend paid 208euro to stay in this 'castle' and when we expressed our disappointment with the place the staff's attitude was so indifferent 'will you be paying with cash or credit card?'. We paid with great reluctance and the whole experience left a bitter taste in my mouth. Celtic Tiger Ireland is alive and well at Barberstown Castle, overpriced hotel, average quality room, poor food and worst of all inconsiderate and rude staff that wanted one thing and one thing only, YOUR MONEY. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

This is an hotel of style and class, its quiet and small, its in the country away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the staff are polite helpful and willing to help, the rooms are huge the bed is comfortable, we have stayed there many a time and even got married there it is the perfect setting for any occasion, the food is second to none and i have never found fault with this hotel.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good but ask for a four poster bed for the experience ;)
