“Lovely hotel in great location”
Reviewed 17 August 2012

We stayed in this hotel as it was very near to the Radisson Blu where our friends where holding their wedding. The staff are absolutely fantastic, the bar is great (!), food fab. Great to have free parking right on site too. Breakfast was lovely, and overall the hotel is brilliant value for money. We didnt realise that there is a nightclub right underneath, but we just asked for a room furthest away, and we didnt get any disruption at all. Our room was great, we had aircon which was a blessing as it was actually hot in Ireland!, shame there wasnt a bath though only a shower, but a small detail i guess. Would definately stay again, many thanks!

The Prince of Wales Hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Athlone with the Mall close by for coffee and shopping. The restaurants and pubs are all within easy walking distance. The staff and service were pleasant and obliging and the breakfast was lovely. BUT, the room was insufferably hot and stuffy with no air-conditioning or ventilation. The street noise and heat made it impossible to sleep and we arose tired and sweaty to face a day of driving.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your recent stay and review.

We were delighted to see that you found our staff and service good. Unfortunately we do not have too much hot weather but 50% of our rooms do have air-conditioning and we have fans available at reception. I am sorry that you did not have a good sleep if passing through Athlone please contact me so I can ensure that you have one of our executive rooms that have air conditioning

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Prince of Wales & the Athlone in the near future.

With Best Regards,

Padraic Whelan

From the moment I arrived in the hotel the staff were amazing. We had a cocktail making session followed by a meal at the hotel. Then we had free access to the night club. It was a great evening followed by a fun night. I have to say it was a no hassle night with the girls. The food was fantastic and the young man doing the demonstration at the cocktail making session was great at his job and was great craic. All in all it was a great location for the weekend and the rooms were lovely and the hotel was in a great location.

What can I say other than fantastic! Unlike the 2 other hotels we stayed at during the same week (had to wait 2hours and 40mins after check in time for room) this hotel was ready for us when we arrived at 2.20p.m! Friendly and welcoming member of staff attended to us immediately (we had been given a room at the back as requested due to another review on trip advisor that said it could be a little noisy on Thursday etc from the nightclub but we never heard a sound!). She explained where everything was and gave us our room key along with 2 complimentary cards for a tea or coffee (a lovely touch). We opened the door to our room and couldn't believe our eyes (we were in room 105). Stunning, beautiful decor with beautiful leather chairs and footstools. I must admit I was worried that the room might be quite small with 2 camp beds for the children but there was ample space and although our kids love hotels with pools; which the previous two hotels in our holiday had had; even our 7 year old daughter was amazed by the room. The hotel had thought of everything- 2 huge wardrobes if you were staying longer in Athlone, TV and DVD player (a real bonus for the kids!), tea and coffee making facilties and air conditioning with it's own control which was bliss! Not to mention the amazing bathroom which had two sinks, bath and separate power/jet shower (which was superb- both my husband and kids found a new obsession for showering due to all the jets etc). The only thing which might annoy other people was the lack of view as the room just looked into the back of a rather ugly buildingand pipes- but remember I had requested a room at the back to remove possible problem of noise and we just kept the net curtain across the window and never thought about what was outside the window! Breakfast was in a class of its own as well- yes there was the usual cereal, yogurts, fresh fruit, juices, crossiants etc but then you were also given a menu from which to order your cooked option. You could order the normal full Irish breakfast or French toast with cinnamon and bacon, pancakes and maple syrup, scrambled eggs etc- everything was made to order and delicious! We ate at the hotel's bar which was also very good. Not only that but on check out we got a card for an extra 10% off our next stay at the hotel! If you are ever heading to Athlone this hotel will not disappoint!

Ate there lunches a few times when on summer holidays in Ireland and must say they were really tasty. It was 4 years ago though but I hope the quality is still there. The tall guy who served me with spuds of different kinds was hillarious and very friendly. Costly food but worth it.
Also remember a very polite, well-dressed gentleman, maybe the boss who I spoke outside the hotel about a chance to get a job. Really nice memories!
