“Diamond in the rough”
Reviewed 18 August 2011 for a stay in August 2011

This is a luxurious property, incredibly well equipped and set in an idyllic location. The cottage is large, and comfortable. The master suite in particular is wonderful, with a picture perfect view over Dunmanus Bay and the peninsula to the south - at least when the weather is clear! The sun room is a great place to relax with a book, look over the bay or just listen to the rain. The AGA stove is easy to use and is not as intimidating as we thought. It makes a wonderful breakfast. All equipment and appliances are of the highest quality.
The Studio bedroom is also beautiful with spectacular views.
The landscaping is beautiful, and the pool is an interesting touch. It was a little too cold during our stay to get much use out of it.
We are a family of keen hikers and runners, so we really enjoyed the location and wonderful hiking trails nearby. The WiFi helped the kids stay connected.
Minor disadvantages: not much room for a large family gathering around the table, the studio was a little damp and musty, the cottage is a long trek from shops. This of course can be viewed as an advantage or disadvantage!

Management Response

Thank you for a great review. I just wanted to respond to the minor disadvantages mentioned at the end.

Regarding dining arrangements, the Cottage offers a kitchen table with seating for 6 and the Studio has its own table and chairs seating 4 guests. There isn't the facility for a large group to sit together due to the layout of both properties, although we do offer plentiful garden furniture for families to dine together outside with BBQ, tables and chairs etc provided.

The Studio is a converted and extended stone barn and has storage heaters to keep it warm and cosy. We did have a maintenance issue with one of the original stone walls earlier this summer (2011) but this has now been resolved and any residual mustiness will soon be gone.

Laharandota is situated 5kms/5 minutes by car from the village of Kilcrohane with its 3 bars and village shop/post office. A larger food shop is located in Durrus at the start of the Sheeps Head (20kms/20 mins drive) and Bantry has a good selection of independent shops and large supermarket (35kms/35 minutes drive). The Sheeps Head offers stunning scenery and views so a trip to the shops is at least a lovely drive!

If you have any questions about the property, its location and facilities, please get in touch. Thank you.

“Going back again and again”
Reviewed 12 July 2011 for a stay in June 2011

I thought I was too young to go back to the same place again and again, when there is so many other places to see in the world during your holidays. There's always something to prove one wrong. To me it was Laharandota. It is simply too hard to find another place like it somewhere else. We spent our "spring holiday" at the artist's cottage two times already. It is a wonderfully restored farm house that makes you feel at home the minute you enter. Every detail just matches the idea of a cozy cottage, somewhere distant, somewhere you can relax and dream yourself away. There is hardly any item you will miss. From a cozy blanket through the DVD collection, to the wintergarden overlooking the sea or the fireplace to keep you warm on a rainy evening. Needless to say, it's all clean and well kept. If you're brave enough: There is a very nice and inviting pool. We only managed to have our feet in it (our visits being in May or early June), but after a long hike - that was heavenly.

If you like hiking, some adventure (crazy dogs, wild and nosy horses, friendly sheep) and want to avoid human beings - you can have it there. If you want to have a beer with the locals, you will find it. Bantry is not far away and will bring you close to civilization, if needed. There are good restaurants, shops, fellow tourists, supermarkets, a cinema, what ever it is that you desire. There's plenty of other things to do, if you move around the area a bit. Beaches, villages, stunning cliffs, lighthouses, pubs, lakes... Looks like we have to go back discovering again. Soon.
