I stopped at these historic buildings on the Slea Head drive with an Australian friend .I found the experience very moving thinking about the families who were deliberately starved to death .Fortunately many of the families managed to get away to the U.S.A

This stop was well-worth the time. As you drive the Dingle peninsula, you will see the signs to this stop. After a short walk, you can see the cottages the people lived in during the famine. The scenery in this area is beautiful.

While driving the 'Slea Head' drive, We stopped to visit the two authentic famine cottages. The leaflet gave the history of the 2 families occupying these 2 cottages. Look out for the beehive hut at the rear of the bigger cottage! The surrounding field also has some animals, they are very tame and if you are travelling with Children, bring some food, as the animals would love that.

We pulled over for a quick stop while driving Slea Head. My Irish ancestors came over during the Famine, so it was interesting to read through their exhibit on what the Famine was like. The grounds are beautiful - views to the Beara Peninsula are stunning. The animals on this farm are super friendly - they are obviously use to visitors - and came running right up to my husband for some head scratches. The exhibits in the cottages were informative - and I was impressed to see the family tree posted on the wall in one cottage. Just make sure you have Euro coins - it's a small family operation, and he didn't have the change to break the larger Euro bills.

This is a stop on Slea Head drive. It’s definitely worth the price & educational. It is an absolutely beautiful setting. The view is stunning from atop the hill where the cottages are. I found the juxtaposition between the beauty of the land & sea vs. the poverty of its inhabitants to be thought provoking. I could almost feel the pain of the people who lived there during the famine.
