Great drive along the coast and beautiful scenery. Misty and foggy, but still beautiful.

“Hauntingly beautiful......BUT!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2011

I fully agree with all the very positive comments regarding The Great Blasket and would urge anyone travelling in the Dingle peninsula not to miss a trip there. You will experience rugged beauty at its very best here, with unimaginable views that will truely take your breath away.
The "BUT" comes in the shape of midges and tiny, black flying things..........billions of them that will happily feast on you, get stuck in your hair, eyebrows, ears and clothes. We visited in September when the weather wasn't very good, so we didn't even need sun block. It therefore didn't cross our minds to bring insect repellant!!!!! Be warned, if you do go to Great Blasket, protect yourself with the best repellant you can afford........and bring reinforcements, you're going to need them.

“Left me speechless”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2011

We traveled to Dingle for the day and wanted to see Blasket Island. We got started a little late and found that we missed the only ferry that ran to Blasket from Dingle. The tour operator directed us to Dún Chaoin which is 30 minutes down the road from Dingle where the ferries ran every hour. We decided that Blasket Island was a must see so we got back in the car for another 30 minutes. While the family enjoyed the view the drive on the NARROW roads gave me white knuckles. We were shuttled to the boat by a dinghy then taken to the island where we were once again shuttled by a dinghy. Once we got there we immediately regretted that we didn't allow more time to spend on the island. The view was one of the best I have ever seen. There is nothing on the island so you must pack your own drinks and snacks for the day. Also there are NO facilities on the island-you are ruffing it. If you want to enjoy the beach I recommend taking a change of clothes so you don't have to be in wet and sandy clothes the rest of the day. I must add a note that the weather was spectacular while we visited. Make sure you check the weather forecast before you go. I think that had the weather not been favorable that it would not have been as enjoyable but still beautiful. I would give yourself at least 2-3 hours to relax on the island. I do not recommend this for elderly or people with difficult time walking as you MUST walk some areas where the footing is difficult.

“Blasket Island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2011

We did NOT go to the Island but the visitor center is fascinating and should be one stop a person makes on the Dingle Peninsula. The Irish Heritage Card (a VERY worthwhile investment!) gets you in free. The demonstrations and exhibits are fascinating and worth the side trip.

“Great day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2011

Spend a day on the Great Blasket. Bring walking shoes and do a circumferential walk around the island. Spend time on the beach and swim but be warned...the water is cold..!
Bring some binoculars and sit on the grassy ledge and watch sailing boats and fishing boats pass through the sound. Also great wildlife watching. The beach is a breeding ground for seals in the winter. Be warned about the landing point as i rough weather it can be tricky.
