Stopped by Silent Valley on our way from Dublin to Craigavon. What a beautiful place. The view from the dam is stunning (in all directions) and, yes, it’s silent! While we were there the lake wasn’t up, so there was no water spilling into the overflow. Didn’t matter…it was still an enjoyable experience. Looking back at the Mourne Mountains with the lake in between is an unforgettable moment.

The walk from the car park to the dam takes about 10-15 minutes. You can get there either by a hiking trail or a foot path. There’s also a lovely pond near the car park.

As we were walking back to the car, we were stopped by a young lady taking a survey about our experience. She was incredibly courteous, good-humored, and didn’t take too much of our time.

So, if you’re in the area, we can recommend stopping by Silent Valley. We spent about an hour at the site.

You can walk around the Reservoir, have a picnic or visit the little museum about the history of its construction which is very interesting. There is a little cafe also.

The Silent Valley got its name when the construction engineers moved in to create the reservoir. Prior to that it was called The Happy Valley. There is a visitor centre and an education centre. The surrounding valleys and Mourne Mountains are beautiful.

A listed monument is the three meter high Mourne Wall that surrounds the huge water catchment area. It crosses 17 peaks and has to be maintained by hand as machinery cannot access it. There are red iron gates set in it along its length and a memorial to the few who died throughout its construction can be found close to the visitors centre. Access is off the Mourne Head Road.

We visited with a coach party. Unfortunately there were so many midges it quite spoilt the occasion. For the fit and active there are graded walking trails. The history of its creation is very interesting and enlightening.
