The food at Matteo’s was exceptional.
The Buddha’s sashimi plate was superb, I thought the main couldn’t possibly be as good. However the white miso baked black cod fillet would have to be one of the best mains I have ever had, fantastic. I will definitely go back and I highly recommend this restaurant.

Matteo’s serves top class food that doesn’t really fit into any category. There are Japanese hints and some other Asian influences but it all comes together in a great dining experience with larger than average portions. There is a very good choice of food and you can choose to have a tasting menu or the usual entree, mains, dessert. It was very difficult to choose as we felt that anything would probably be great. The desserts which we shared were excellent; four small desserts that were very tasty and beautifully presented. The service was excellent and they have an interesting wine list although not a lot of Australian wines on the list.

We dined here last month on a Friday night. Rather than opting for the tasting menu, we ordered a la carte. For entrees, we shared the Oysters five ways - the various flavours were tasty. For main course, I had the Steamed King George Whiting which was wrapped in nori with Balmain big tail meat, Chinese broccoli and spring onion dashi. The fish was perfectly cooked and delicious. My husband had the Seared Victorian Black Angus Eye fillet of beef, with braised beef cheek, king brown mushroom, caramelised onion, potato croquette and Mongolian sauce. He also loved his dish. Whilst I was pretty full after our mains, I was able to fit in dessert and the kitchen was able to transform their famous “Eureka Nugget” dessert into a gluten free dessert. The dish consisted of peanut butter parfait, salted caramel ice cream, cherry and honeycomb. Simply decadent! We were really impressed by the extensive local and international wine list here - we had a bottle of the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz. The service was friendly and accommodating. I’d recommend this restaurant for a casual yet fine dining experience.

Matteo's has it all, great intimate setting that's well lit and has an all round authentic and relaxed vibe. The staff cater for all your needs while being friendly and professional. The food was...amazing and the catered to a range of annoying dietary requirements we had without any fuss. Highly recommend this place.

We came for dinner to celebrate a birthday on a wet evening during a weeknight and the restaurant was well patronised, so that was a good sign. Booking online was both easy and convenient.

Greeted at the door and shown to our table promptly with water and menus arriving soon after.

The website can be a little confusing as to dining style but we settled for the standard a la carte.

Ambiance felt cosy and relaxed. Table service friendly.

Our selection of the entrees and the mains were very good, a visual feast with great flavours. Portion size tended to be small but side dishes would have assisted those with a larger appetite.

Our desserts were fantastic, very creative and delicious.

We did not have wine or coffee.

Good choice for a special occasion, might be an issue for the price sensitive.

Parking available on Brunswick Street or down the side street but watch for permit parking zones. Tram stop right outside the restaurant.
