Had a day in the railway which was great. As part of an organized trip we were supposed to go up The Brocken. It's was snowing lightly when we set off but got heavier as we went up. Just over half way up we were told because of the weather the train would not be going all the way up. Our guide organized for us the go on another if the line to Eisfelder. The trip was amazing in the snow and very seasonal. Because of the change we didn't have a food stop so this was a little gruelling. All in all a nice day but a little stressful without food and drink. One tip: get a 3 day travel card a reduces the price by about half!!

We boarded the train to The Broken
It was snowing lightly when we left
Really beautiful scenery getting more snowy as we went
Half way train could go no further due to thick snow further up
So trip cancelled. Our guide got us transferred onto different trip Eisfelder,
What a treat for Stream Train enthusiasts there were at least 4 steam trains in operation.
Lovely winter wonderland scenery gets you in the mood for Christmas
Really worth a visit

This place has become a bit of a regular fix for me,I think I have now been in all seasons and every time it offers something different.
For me not knowing the steam age back in the UK this is probably the closest I will ever get to 365 day working railway.
The Railway itself is a fantastically diverse in its running from the “Brockenbahn” with its steep gradients and deep forests to the Harzquerbahn with deep wooded valleys and the gentle Selketalbahn with its more pastoral outlook.
I would highly recommend this as an attraction for the whole family.

Although it was snowing and foggy and cold as heck, the ride to the top of the mountain to Broken was fun. A lady comes through the train at every stop with krauter liquor, so it’s easy to stay warm.

It takes a while to reach the top. Try to go on a clear day, you can see for a hundred miles in every direction. Fun way to spend the day!

If you are expecting this trip to have majestic panoramas similar to those seen from the Snowdon mountain railway, you will be deeply disappointed (Rachel H must have been up Snowdon blindfolded). 95% of the time is spent chugging through the dense forest and the vista only opens up when you reach the summit. Do not even think about paying the exorbitant 41 Euro return fare (wherever you get on) if the weather looks the slightest bit iffy as you will get to the top and see nothing but clouds.

That said riding a smoky, smelly. rickety steam train is nostalgic for those of us who do remember Dr. Beeching and youngsters can admire the primitive technology. The engine drivers, oily rags and fat controllers obviously enjoy playing with a full-scale train set. However, I concur with Skidog52 - the ticket office staff are surlier than BA cabin crew and all need to be sent to charm school for unacceptable rudeness and condescension to the paying public, no doubt a throwback to the DDR attitude to customer service. And all they want to do is sell as many tickets as possible (1.5m per year) irrespective of the number of seats available on the trains. At busy times, there is likely to be standing room only there and back so do not say I did not warn you.

In summary, good for railway enthusiasts and train spotters but for the rest of us the cost outweighs the benefit.
