Review of Harz Steam Railway

Harz Steam Railway

This place has become a bit of a regular fix for me,I think I have now been in all seasons and every time it offers something different.
For me not knowing the steam age back in the UK this is probably the closest I will ever get to 365 day working railway.
The Railway itself is a fantastically diverse in its running from the “Brockenbahn” with its steep gradients and deep forests to the Harzquerbahn with deep wooded valleys and the gentle Selketalbahn with its more pastoral outlook.
I would highly recommend this as an attraction for the whole family.

Although it was snowing and foggy and cold as heck, the ride to the top of the mountain to Broken was fun. A lady comes through the train at every stop with krauter liquor, so it’s easy to stay warm.

It takes a while to reach the top. Try to go on a clear day, you can see for a hundred miles in every direction. Fun way to spend the day!

If you are expecting this trip to have majestic panoramas similar to those seen from the Snowdon mountain railway, you will be deeply disappointed (Rachel H must have been up Snowdon blindfolded). 95% of the time is spent chugging through the dense forest and the vista only opens up when you reach the summit. Do not even think about paying the exorbitant 41 Euro return fare (wherever you get on) if the weather looks the slightest bit iffy as you will get to the top and see nothing but clouds.

That said riding a smoky, smelly. rickety steam train is nostalgic for those of us who do remember Dr. Beeching and youngsters can admire the primitive technology. The engine drivers, oily rags and fat controllers obviously enjoy playing with a full-scale train set. However, I concur with Skidog52 - the ticket office staff are surlier than BA cabin crew and all need to be sent to charm school for unacceptable rudeness and condescension to the paying public, no doubt a throwback to the DDR attitude to customer service. And all they want to do is sell as many tickets as possible (1.5m per year) irrespective of the number of seats available on the trains. At busy times, there is likely to be standing room only there and back so do not say I did not warn you.

In summary, good for railway enthusiasts and train spotters but for the rest of us the cost outweighs the benefit.

This is one of the highlights of the Harz mountains. It seems like the time is standing still in this train. The furniture is old fashioned. The sound of the train is great aswell. If you look out the window you can see a lot of the nature of the Harz mountains. I can only recommend a trip on this train.

We travelled on the HSB steam railway from Wernigerode to Brocken and back, as a day trip by train from Hannover. Although a long day trip (about 12 hrs in total) it was really enjoyable and well worth it. The steam train climbs up through the Harz Mountains, giving great views of valleys and gorges, before breaking through the tree line at the, giving spectacular views from the top at Brocken. There had been heavy snowfall previously which made it even more picturesque. Luckily it was a bright clear day, allowing great views. The train was very busy (it was a Saturday) but we stood on the open ends of the carriages, which although cold allowed great camera shots and full impact of the steam and soot.
