“Remarkable Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 January 2012

We experienced a wonderfully remarkable stay at Castle Hotel Auf Schoenburg during our travels through Germany in October. Based on my research and reviews on Tripadvisor, I expected a lot from this hotel. It delivered. Our entire experience, from the service, to our room overlooking the Rhine, to the immaculate restorations, to the furnishings, to the setting was remarkable.

An added bonus, we enjoyed complementary drinks and snacks in our room, including a nice carafe of sherry. We missed the tea

The restaurant is quite nice also and includes prix fix options. We had a very nice, very romantic anniversary dinner at the hotel restaurant.

We tried to stay and extra night, but sadly, the hotel was completely booked months in advance. Highly recommended!!!

This is a luxurious time machine, and based on the remarkable experience, we've returned twice with friends and family who've visited us in Europe. The immaculately restored castle offers delightful comfort in an unmatched historic setting. Service is always professional and polite. Rooms adapt to their location within the castle, so you may find your bathtub nested in an old fireplace, or your bed atop a canopied roost. Modern technology is cleverly hidden in the rooms, so you can feel transported back 500 years, or be right at home with broadband. Plus, the setting offers the beautiful Rhein valley vineyards, and small walled towns from every aspect - and trails allow enjoyable walks and hikes throughout the region.

We've sampled three of the various multi-course dinners in the restaurant, and were extremely pleased with the fine quality, selection and perfectly-paired local wines.

A far less serious bonus is in the rampart/castle wall museum: a virtual catapult, allowing guests to 'mock attack' a castle across the valley! Kids and adults can feel like knights and ladies of old. This unique castle hotel is a delight for any age.

Room Tip: Tower rooms have the most unique feel and decor, but every room offers an amazing vista.

With our family having done quite a bit of traveling in our history, Auf Schoenburg Castle will go down as one of the most memorable overnight stays EVER. After driving nearly 4 hours, we arrived well after dark - which was probably good since we had no idea how far some of the drop-offs were on the approach road as well as the wooden bridge at the castle. The other TripAdvisor reviews tipped us off to plan ahead however - and having packed all we would need for our one overnight in backpacks, we easily managed the walk from the parking area up to the front desk. I can definately see how folks trying to lug big suitcases up the approach road would have a problem, but also noted the luggage service that was offered - which would essentially solve that problem.

The woman at the desk promptly greeted us - I felt she knew who we were before I had a chance to tell her - and within moments she was putting on her coat in order to show us to our room. Not needing any assistance with luggage, we were escorted to then given a personal tour of our room (#25). We immediately felt the warmth and hospitality of the staff during the check-in. Suite #25, The Honeymoon Suite, is essentially a two-story house that easily accomodated our family of four - with the parents upstairs and the children downstairs. The suite was very warm, clean and comfortable - and the bathtub with shower was great for our purposes. We did not discover any wifi however wired, high-speed internet was available at no additional charge at the desk in the downstairs of the suite. Sherry, other treats, and a fully-stocked minifridge awaited us, and given it was Christmas Day and everything in town was closed, we proceeded to the hotel restaurant for dinner.

The restaurant was superb in both atmosphere and cuisine. Two meals off the children's menu plus two adult meals off the ala carte' menu - with wine and dessert - came to about 100 Euros. Considering the exceptional ambience, food and service, I consider this a very reasonable cost. Breakfast was included in our stay, and it was just fabulous.

Since we arrived after dark, we were able to experience the true majesty of the castle in the morning. With great weather, we explored a bit - going up to the 3rd floor then out onto the top of the castle's walls - then back down and all around the grounds. Although only part of the castle is open for tours and wandering, there were plenty of spots where we could enjoy and take photos. There are also plenty of things to see inside the castle's ground floor itself, and in departing we purchased a book about the castle's history for a very reasonable 6 Euros (both English and German versions are available).

My only complaint was with regard to the cancellation policy. Auf Schoenburg was in the middle of a two-week European vacation, and given our trip was during late December - and we made our reservation two months prior - it made me very anxious knowing how bad weather could very much impact our trip. We understand how reserving a room only to cancel it at the last minute is poor form, but nobody can control the weather and I simply could not imagine making the trip up to the castle in snow or ice. Trip insurance may or may not have helped out, had we needed to cancel due to weather - but fortunately the weather was fabulous thus canceling became a non-issue.

Thank you to the Huttl Family, as well as all the staff of Auf Schoenburg, for your dedication and care in serving your customers. Staying in your castle was an experience my family and I will never forget.

the germans do know how to do things well with no fuss.
location was stunning - tasting menu memorable and prices very fair for what you got.
im no millionaire so in the UK ,asking for a gin and tonic and a champagne in the UK in a fancy place (I'd want the price) - here - it was less than in my local pub - fantastic.
Also you can walk the battlements and there are no stupis signs everywhere.
room and batroom were exceptional/
Go once at least to here.

An impressive castle in a beautiful setting overlooking the Rhine Valley, staying here was really memorable experience. I'd recommend checking the hotels website and requesting specific rooms - I think for it to seem really magical you would want to stay in one of the tower rooms, in the older part of the hotel. We stayed in Room 36, which had a good size balcony, and was very well-decroated to look historic inside. It was a lot of stairs to get there though! You could say the newer part looks slightly out of place, with all the red brick. Inside, though, the hotel has a lot of charm, and the staff are very helpful. The terrarce for the breakfast has lovely views; we had dinner there as well, which was very enjoyable. It's a15 minute brisk walk down into Oberwesel, then about 25-30 to get back up the hill. I'd certainly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting the experience of staying in a castle.
