“A very interesting if over-restored cathedral”

The cathedral is a fascinating building, but has clearly been very throughly restored in the nineteenth century. Tilman Riemanschneider's tomb of Henry II and Kunigund is magnificant and the church has a lot of fine late medieval altarpieces. The Ritter is beautiful.

The cathedral sits on the top of hill above Bamberg and overlook the town proudly. Together with court household and new residence building whole area looks impressive. Interior is nicely decorated and dignified. Unfortunately there were too many visitors at the time which make the place feel too touristy with lack of spirituality.

One of the nicest dorms in whole Germany. Really liked the architecture and the view around. Recommended!

Having just come from Italy where they make you pay through the nose and queue for hours to visit most of the more impressive cathedrals (Florence and Siena for example) it was quite refreshing to be able to walk straight into this one in Bamberg. The Domplatz is as imposing as any and the exterior is nothing less than impressive. Going inside you are immediately struck by its gothic austerity and it won't take you long, after stopping to admire the tomb of the only Pope to be buried outside Italy, to notice the other pecularity of this cathedral that it has two quires each with its own altar and crucifix at the east and west ends. There were quite a few learned looking guides pointing out the intricacies of this sculture and that painting in a range of different languages to their respective groups so there is probably a lot more to discover there than I did. But if you're the kind of tourist who feels he hasn't "done" the city unless he has walked the aisle of its cathedral then your pocket will certainly appreciate the free entry and your fitbit (if you have one) the steep climb from the old town and up the steps to get there. If this visit leaves you in need of a visit of another kind then you'll find a public toilet in the courtyard of the history museum adjacent though you'll be charged 50 cents. If you're in luck you'll be treated to the spectacle as we were of two cleaning ladies cleaning the cobblestones of the courtyard with vacuum cleaners.

It’s not a totally impressive 13th century cathedral but it is a landmark on a hill overlooking the entire city of Bamberg, and it does have a unique style with four large towers. The interior has a choir at each end, frescos and offers a lot of history with burial tombs-crypts.
