It is small town around 250 km from Rishikesh on NH58. The 8-9 hour journey along the river Ganges and then Alaknanda at higher altitudes provides breath taking views. The town acts as a starting point for a number of treks and also has a cable car to Auli - India's best known skiing place. I would like to recommend this place for trekkers, hikers and leisure travelers who would like to stay away from the hustles and bustles of the city life and enjoy the tranquility of Himalayas.
It is a small town to stay and go to various places nearby like Auli, Flower Valley, Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, etc.
It was amazing to see the unexplored & virgin mountains while our way to Badrinath & Mana village from Joshimath. An amused feeling goes through heart while visiting Mana village and Sarswati origin point. Mountains & river ganga/alaknanda wont leave alone anywhere while traveling from Rishikesh to Mana
Beautiful place after riding NH58 for 6 hours from Rishikesh.. Amazing Landscape.. Scenic and so many places can be visited within 20 Kms raidus.
Joshimath is always buzzing with action, be it the Char Dham season or the winter. The " Gate" system ( one way traffic) to the Holy shrine Badrinath starts at Joshimath. It is also the gateway to Hemkhund Sahib, thousands of Sikhs on motorcycle visit the Hemkund Sahib every year. My last visit to Joshimath was in Nov 2013, the rope-way car was not functioning at that time. The town was bit low on its spirits following the massive calamity in June 2013. The rescue operations on choppers were based out of Joshimath.
Auli is a great place to be in Joshimath area. Also, at the highest point within the ITBP campus in Joshimath, one gets a beautiful view of the snow clad Himalayas.
