We stayed at le Ski d'Or for 7 nights in Feb 2012. Family of 2 adults + 1 child. Below sums up al l the pros (and really just 1 con) of this fabulous little 4-star hotel. The exterior of the hotel does not give you the slightest clue about how great this hotel is however:
- Extremely spacious and clean room with a king bed + a single (for a child) with one of the most smartly designed storage spaces I have ever encountered in a hotel. You will find plenty of storage in the room and bathroom (the toilet is a separate room to the main bathroom so this is a nice feature). There is also space above the closet where you can neatly stow away your luggage during your stay (I hate having suitcases around !).
- Sound proofing is very good.
- Breathtaking view of one of the pistes
- Food is absolutely amazing - think fine dining Michelin Star quality - not far from that. We paid for the half board and they have a set menu for each day (ranging from veal to duck confit to cheeses to seafood buffet) and once again, quality and quantity of food is absolutely amazing. A very good spread for breakfast as well.
- Every single staff in the hotel is as friendly and as helpful as it gets. Everything we asked for was given to us with a smile and within seconds.
- There is a warm storage room right next to the reception area where you can store your skis and there is a special boots warmer storage for your ski boots.
- There is also a spa (albeit small) where you find a jacuzzi (for max of 5), sauna and steam room. Though small, it is a perfect place for you to end the day before dinner.
- Cross the small land right in front of the hotel and off you go! There are 2 ski lifts to choose from (paid and free) within a minute from the hotel.
- plenty of eateries around for a quick snack or hot drink and lunch
- free wifi (strong signal and relatively good speed too) in the room and hotel - just ask for your password the recap. note that the passwords are not interchangeable between devices but fear not, ask and you will get additional passwords with a smile
- If you travel with kids and intend to sign your kids up to ski school (like we did), both ESF and Evolution 2 start the day literally just 100m from the front of the hotel! You drop your kid/s at the meeting point and off they go from 9am-12pm everyday.

Cons-
- The shower door (attached to the bath) does not sit in position properly so we slide a small towel underneath to keep it in place. This is about the only issue we've encountered

A few tips:
- remember to pack your swimwear if you wish to use the spa
- there are many shops around where you can find a massive range of ski wear but they are costlier (as you would expect) than the city shops
- we found a self-operated laundrette across the hotel on our last day of stay (right in the complex in front of the hotel)
- There is a grocery store a short walk up the lane (Sherpa) where you can find a good range of everything from food to toiletries to mineral water

Room Tip: We were on floor 3 and facing the piste and it was great

The hotel is just over the road from the snow so very easy access to lifts etc. It has a storage room for skis and boot warmers. The spa is quite small with a jacuzzi seating 5 people but was very welcome at the end of the day. There is also a sauna and steam room with a relaxation area with two chairs.

The comfort room was very comfortable, double bed, space to move around the bed, little desk and TV on the wall with a lovely bathroom with separate toilet.

We stayed on a half board basis and the food was simply wonderful! 3 to 4 courses a night (depending on whether or not you have the cheese board) with the mains being varied and very well presented. The fish buffet on a Thursday is well worth a visit. We had a lobster between us but people were having one each! The choice of fish was good and then a mixture of fruits for dessert.

Cannot fault the hotel or its staff. The views from the hotel windows were also amazing.

The only annoyance we experienced was that we had the window open slightly at night time (as the weather was unseasonably warm) and so we heard the people coming out of the clubs. However, I don't think you could stay anywhere in Val Claret and not hear people at kicking out time. Probably something you may not hear if your windows are closed.

NOTE: This hotel is in the Val Claret part of Tignes and not main Tignes so it is further up the valley. We have just come back from a one week stay at this hotel and I cannot fault it or the staff that are party too its inner sanctum.
The Manager and his wife were a pleasure to meet and always amenable.
The bar and restaurant staff could do no more than they already did and were always on hand to help.
Our room had a pleasant south west exposure and it was great to open our curtains to a magnificent expanse of the mountain and some of its runs which made for an exciting start to each of the days we were there.
We stayed at the hotel under the bed a breakfast pension and really the breakfasts were a treat, buffet style but with lots to choose from sweet to savoury.
We ate at the restaurant in the evening three times. They served both an a la carte and a set menu. We had the a la carte once and the set menu twice and could fault none of the meals provided particularly the desserts. The cost of the menu was comparable to the outside restaurants where there was plenty to offer. The standard of the food both in an out of the hotel was exceptional for evening meals. Lots of regional dishes to choose from everywhere. We recommend the restaurant Pepe 2000 and its partner restaurant up the road under the bridge to the left of the hotel.
The hotel offered a small spa which my other half could vouch for and said was a blessing one day when he needed to ease the old bones.
There was a locker for your skis and racks to warm your boots in a little room at the reception level which opened to the outdoors. A perfect place to change for the slopes.
The positioning of the hotel was perfect for access to the lifts. Tufts was a five minute walk up a slight incline and the Bollin/Fresse lifts were skiable to in 5 mins through an underpass. You could ski back to the door at the end of each day if you chose!
I cannot fault this hotel one little bit.
Our room was compact clean and just perfect to our needs. Lots of storage space and comfortable bed. There was a nice sized bath and shower, with wash basin and separate WC. Bathroom bits and a hair dryer were provided and clean fresh white towels were available every day if requested.... we tended to keep ours, to be eco friendly. The rooms were cleaned every day and the beds made which was great to return home too after long hours on the slopes. No tea and coffee facilities or mini-bar though if you need these, bit coffee and tea could be got at the bar anytime of the day. There was a free safe in each room and you collected its key from the reception. Free wifi in the rooms you obtain the code at the reception.
The hotel was provided with a nice compact, comfortable and friendly bar area with chairs and slouchy settees. An open log fire was set up each evening and the bar was fully stocked with a smile at the bar.
The only downside to the hotel was the fact that the euro had at the time of our stay nearly equalled the pound and so what would have been usually a reasonably priced middle of the range costing boutique hotel came to be a non-usual expensive break away. My other half also didnt like that there was no porter to help with your bags but I think if we had asked someone would have helped.
Outside the hotel the ski range was exceptional with the glacier in striking distance by an underground funicular. Runs for all expertise and off piste also.
Val D'Isere was over the other side of the hill :( but too be honest I would rate TIGNES 100% against a mediocre 70% VAL D'ISERE.
Buy a full ESPACE KILLY SKI PASS and you can ski everywhere, the TIGNES ONLY SKI PASS is not worth the cost against this one.
Lots of eateries outside on the slopes but ridiculously expensive. For two each lunch we paid for soup, roll and a drink (hot or cold) minimum of £16 a day... make sure you pack your own lunch or eat heartily at breakfast time.
All in all I would come again, it equals les trois vallees where we have been before. The hotel I would recommend anyone to stay who has a nice bit of money put away for their break.
We drove to the resort, I warn you, you will need your chains unless you have winter tyres. Its an easy drive there but dont listen to your Sat Nav (get MICHELIN auto planner print off and head for Chambery) you will end up having a lovely detour to Mont Blanc if you listen to your Sat Nav( oh yes if you end up at Mont Blanc and want to wander into Italy, pay for a return trip on the French side otherwise you will pay a fortune)yep we forgot and ended up on a blocked road only 32 miles away from the resort and had to return from whence we came. But to be honest the drive and scenery was worth it from home if you have the time and can share the driving. Tignes is a car free resort and so you have to park your car in an underground car park... we organised this thorugh the hotel it was £16 a day I believe.
Well done Tignes and Hotel Le Ski d'Or... a true early ski nugget break for us.
