“It would have been fine - but that smell!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2012

My husband and I stayed here in May 2011. When we checked in a porter took us to our room. The moment we opened the door both of us immediately stepped back. There was a very strong sewer gas smell emanating from somewhere - we never figured out where.

The room appeared clean enough, though small, dark, and damp. I did not want to unpack because I was worried the smell would seep into our clothes. We went to the front desk to request a room change. They sent a maid up to bleach the toilet. It didn't help. We returned to the desk and apologized but reiterated that we just could not stay in that room. They told us there simply were no other rooms available.

We were literally walking out of the door with our suitcases, having called another hotel, when suddenly a room opened up.

To be fair to the front desk staff, who appeared young and nervous, we ended up in a much nicer room at no extra charge. They did eventually do what they could to make our stay comfortable and we appreciated that effort.

I would caution travelers that the images of rooms on the website are not representative of all rooms in the hotel. As others have noted, it really makes a difference if you are in a room facing the interior garden. Be sure to request that.

We stayed at the standard room. Room was small, but cute. Provencal deco. Residential area, you will need a car! Bathroom was good, but no curtain .

My wife and I really liked the hotel: the room was spacious and very clean, the yard looked very attractive and the restaurant was really on the level. Probably hath staff could be a little less official but it could be a subjective opinion...

We're not huge fans of Best Western Hotels but La Magnaneraie exceeded all our expectations. We enjoyed our stay approx 10 years ago & always talked about returning. This year a touring holiday gave us the opportunity to revisit for 3 nights what I can only describe as a 'haven of tranquillity'. The hotel is not in the centre of Avignon but across the river in Villeneuve-les-Avignon so I would suggest you will need transport to get you to the Palace of the Popes, Rocher des Doms and the bridge of Avignon. If you are looking for somewhere quiet to relax after a busy day sightseeing or a lazy day around the pool & a wander around well maintained gardens then I would recommend La Magnaneraie. Meals can be served outside on the terrace overlooking the garden, the menu is excellent with plenty of choice & as for price let’s say it's worth paying a little extra for great French cuisine. The staff were really helpful & friendly including Paul the hotel manager who is very visible, taking the time to talk to his guests to ensure they are enjoying their stay. On both occasions we have stayed in a garden room which is spacious & secluded

We really enjoyed our stay here. We stayed in a very large room with beautiful old furniture and a view out to the country side. The room was spacious after staying in other tiny hotels in France. The hotel is not in central avignon, but this is perfect if you have a hire car and want to escape the busy city. The city is a 2 minute drive. It was disappointing that the restaurants were not open close by all weekend, however we tried the hotel restaurant and it was one of the best meals of my life! Very expensive, however it is gourmet and high quality food. Would not recommend the hotel breakfast, did not appreciate the rotten fruit. Overall, the staff were friendly and I would recommend this hotel with confidence.
