“Wonderful, friendly service, spacious semi-detached house, convenient location, garden and spectacular views”

We spent 8 nights at this villa, our first trip to Tropea. Travelling with two small children we were looking for something within walking distance to the town (and coffee!), with a garden. Easy to book, as the owner Cristian speaks and writes good English. As we were driving, we met Cristian at the Tropea train station and were escorted to the house which is only a couple of minutes away. Very easy process!

It is situated on a hill above Tropea, with stunning views of the old town, across to Stromboli and the Eolie Islands. Given the geography in this area, the hillside location meant it was withing a walking distance to the old town, but in reality it was easier to drive. The walk down took around 5-10 mins to the town, 13 mins to the beach and is not difficult. The walk up however was around 10 mins from the old town but all up hill so not easy! With two small kids, we opted for the more child friendly choice (but less environmentally friendly!) of taking the car. For me, I prefer a location where the whole family can easily walk to the town and I had looked for something specifically within walking distance- so the practicality was a bit of a disappointment. BUT it was probably unavoidable for a villa in Tropea! Any central location in the old town would have been an apartment which we did not want.

The house is also situated directly above the provincial road. Initially when I saw this my heart sank - I hate road noise - but the reality was that the road noise at night was little if any and did not disturb our sleep at all (and during the day, also not bad).

The villa is two storied, and in a single building, half of which is where the family live. I suspect the villa might be lived in by family members when not high season as it had a well lived in feel with plenty of books and knick knacks around. The villa is modern. The front entrance opens directly in a large living/dining area. There is a small TV mounted on the wall. The couches, sadly, are not the most comfortable, but one is a sofa bed which would be useful if you were a large party.

Next to the living room, you find the kitchen, well equipped with pots, pans, bowls, cutlery etc. We cooked many meals here and found it more than adequate. There is no dishwasher. It would be great if the owners could also provide tea towels for drying (even though there is a dish rack, tea towels are very useful). It has doors opening onto the back patio. There is also a toilet with washing machine on the ground floor.

Upstairs are the two bedrooms and the main bathroom (with shower). One bedroom has a queen bed and two single beds in it (baby cot also available). The other bedroom has a queen bed in it. Our children slept in the singles, and had no complaints - they slept well. The mattress on the queen bed in the second bedroom, which we slept in, was not comfortable and could do with replacement. We added a couple of pillows under the mattress to prop up the sags!

The whole house was cleaned well before our arrival. We booked for 10 days and did not have a change of linen/towels during the time. This was probably to be expected given the price we were paying in low season, but if we were paying high season prices I would have expected a change of linen/towels, especially as the towels were quite thin and small.

The garden was shared with a small villa also on the property (right next to the larger house but set back from the larger house). The garden had some great furniture for kids, including small table and stools, and a seat in the shape of a ship, which the girls loved! There was outdoor seating for adults as well as a BBQ. The owners did not use the garden, but I hadn't expected from the description for it to be shared with the small villa - although the description said shared garden, I presumed this meant the owners. It wasn't really a big issue for us but again, personal choice, I would have preferred to have a more private garden situation.

A huge advantage of Tropea for families travelling with smaller children is that the restaurants open 6/6.30 - very rare in Italy and a lifesaver for us!

I cannot say enough about the helpfulness and friendliness of the family who own the villa. They helped with restaurant recommendations, day trip suggestions, printing of documents...and kindly gave us homemade preserves during our stay including a delicious marmalade and bottled red onions (Tropea is famous for cipolli rosso!). The fact the family's cat had five kittens was an added bonus for our daughters! As was Kiko the dog!

Overall, the villa represented excellent value for its size, location and amenities - we paid around 740 euros for 10 nights.

“Loved it!”

I spent the first week of January 2012 in Tropea with my wife, daughters (ages 9 and 10), and mother- and father-in-law (in their late 70s). We loved the property. Our daughters slept in the living room, my wife and I had one bedroom, and my in-laws had the second bedroom. We found the house to be well-equipped and comfortable. Although the weather was on the cool side, it was nice enough to walk along the beach. We ate at several nice restaurants, and our daughters had fun playing in the yard at the house. The location of the property feels very private, and it has spectacular views of the ocean. We also found the Buttafuoco family to be extremely pleasant. They regularly bought us homemade treats to eat, including home made wine. We definitely would love to return.
