I have travelled all other the world and know many volcanoes, active or not, but this one is really precious! Like a Big Friendly Giant! The hike to the top is demanding but worth the suffering!
And the island is so beautiful with its black sand beaches, its crystal water still pleasant to swim in October, the sweet smell
of jasmine everywhere, and a lovely restaurant, the Osservatorio, with an outside terrace where you can safely watch the volcano's eruptions at night!
One of the most special places I've been in my life!

I had been wanting to see it and climb it for a long time.. At last, being in Sicily with my friend, we decided to go, for his birthday. Great experience: hard to go up the 900m amsl, but rewarded by both beautiful views going up and watching the volcano erupt at the top. Three hours to go up, almost two to come down. We were dead the next day: all worth it.

2.5 hours walk up.
Approx 1.5 hours at the top.
2 hours descent.

People will have differing opinions on how tough this walk up and down is. I'm English, fairly fit but I am not as used to hiking as mountain dwelling folk like the Swiss, Austrians etc.

There were a few Swiss in our group and they found the walk fairly easy. I didn't struggle, but you sweat A LOT so bring at least 2 litres of water, changes of t shirt (I used 3) and ensure you have proper walking boots. Also bring some food to boost your energy such as a banana, some sweets and even some electrolytes mixed into your water. Some may find this unnecessary but the staff at Stromboli understate this hike and downplay it somewhat in my opinion.

Now the warning is out of the way, I thoroughly recommend this trip. You get to the summit at sunset and if you are lucky will see and hear some eruptions. We heard several and saw 3 or 4 explosions and were even rained on by volcanic ash.

The walk down is predominately through volcanic ash which is just like sand. A little tough on the knees perhaps but all downhill - obviously.

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the world's most monitored volcano.

We came to stromboli on a private boat, had great swimming in the sea all day, and then at night we went one a tender boat to go see real vulcanic eruption.
They say it erupts every 10 to 20 minutes, but were lucky enough to see 7 eruptions in less then 40 minutes.
Every time u see it its just breathtaking, you get this mixed feeling of excitement and a little bit of fear. I would recommend it to anyone!
