“Really cute - like dinner for one”
Reviewed 14 January 2012

The food is really good, local, and based on very old recipes, mainly fish.

As tourists, we couldn't understand the menu which was then explained to us in English. They were very serious about that explaining every point on the menu to the smallest details.

Another very nice thing we'll remember is one of the waiters. It was an older man serving and explaining the food and bringing an aperitive or some digestives (for free) and drinking a glass with us.

It was a very nice experience and if you have the chance to eat there and you like fish, you should definitely do it.

“A must if you are in San Remo”
Reviewed 15 October 2011

A little difficult to find if you are just coming into San Remo but definitely worth the walk. The owner is trying to recreate old original local recipes long forgotten. The place is small but absolutely charming and beautiful and we were treated like kings and queens. The waiter explained every item on the local menu is minute details in English and there was even a linguini with fresh porcini mushrooms (in season at the time) that was not on the menu. They started the meal with their own pomegranate liquor mixed with champagne as an appetizer (on the house). We shared appetizers as suggested and then moved on to main dishes that were flavorful and delicate. The owner meanwhile circulates amongst the guests and creates a wonderful atmosphere where you feel welcome and like you are part of his family. We ended the meal with a surprising vanilla gelato with a hint of basil vinegar and pepper on top and wonderful cappuccinos. He then came over with liquors all on the house, his own lemon cello with basil and grappa. All in all, we had a wonderful dining experience that I would recommend to anyone!!

“Good Food and a Friendly Owner”
Reviewed 3 October 2011

Taverna Al 29's name comes from a gamble taken by its original owner. He wanted to open his own restaurant and too all his money to the casino and placed a bet on number 29. I was told this story by the current owner who is rightfully proud of the recipes for local dishes he inherited with the place. The meal was great and only outdone by the charm of those serving us.

“The best of many great dining experiences in San Remo”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

Although we did not see the TripAdvisor reviews before discovering 29 Taverna (actually our daughter discovered it during a summer stay) it certainly deserves the number 1 rating it currently has. The staff is small and wonderful: the proprietor is fun and engages happily with the guests as well as serving, the waiter (there is only one) speaks many languages and is extremely helpful with the wonderful menu. "La cuoca" (the chef) is, we believe, the owner's wife and seems to be assisted by an older woman who is probably the mother (his/her's?). That's it: four folks doing an amazing job with the cooking and service. We ate there twice, every dish was perfect and the courses were well spaced out -- happily because of the generous portions and the lovely ambiance. We like long dinners and that's the way it's done here. Reservations are needed as many locals seem to love the place. It is a small space but can accommodate a group of up to 8 at one table, and 4-6 at another. We did not have a reservation the first attempt and could not be seated, but made sure we did for the two following visits...and noted both times several groups being turned away. Do make a reservation if you are in San Remo and don't miss these wonderfully prepared traditional dishes, the very original Basil/Proseco apertif, and the lovely, leisurely service. Buon apetito!

“Quaint and delicious.”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

We had a wonderful dinner here back in july. If you are looking for " classic " Italian food, this might not be the right choice. If you on the other hand are a food lover and happy to explore the delicious regional food that italy has to offer than, you are in luck.
Taverna al 29 prepare wonderful and tasty Ligurian cuisine. The recipes are traditional of the area going back hundred of years.
The owner is friendly and happy to share history of the food served. Since Liguria is the motherland of pesto you might be getting a fair amount of dishes with pesto in it, but not everything.
We had a beautiful two and half hour dinner while was pouring down outside and had truly a blast.
