Villa Gabrisa is no better than poor in all but the view at a very overblown price and was the worst, most disappointing hotel experience; and one of the most expensive; we’ve ever had in Italy; and we’ve now been every popular Italian destination possible in some of the best hotels
I am at a loss how this overpriced hotel gets such good reviews.
I suppose all reviews are to a degree comparative with other places visited, other experiences and expectations. There is no comparison with this hotel or La Favorita in Sorrento, Santa Caterina in Amalfi, Oasi Olympia in Sant Agata or the Grand Hotel Oriente in Naples. All which were cheaper than Villa Gabrisa, some half the price with better views
The Good - and ONLY good aspect of Villa Gabrisa is the view. Not the best we had on the Amalfi coast and as the entirety of the Amalfi coast has great views, not exactly that special. Many hotels and restaurants in Positano have similar views.
The OK - the junior suites are reasonable quality, although dated and in need of refurbishment – especially the bathrooms and terrace where the lights no longer work and where hundreds of ants crawl all over you when you use the terrace.
The bad - everything else. The location, the traffic, the food and the ants.
The main problems are all about the location – nowhere near to beaches or the main areas of Positano, and a restaurant 3 feet from the only internal; busy road through Positano.
Villa Gabrisa claims on it’s website ‘Getting down to the beach and shopping area is easy; a pleasant 15-minute walk or a short bus ride.’ This is totally inaccurate. Booking.com says ‘This property is 3 minutes walk from the beach’ and Hotels.com says ‘Near the beach’ ‘Positano Ferry (13-minute walk)’ and ‘Spiaggia Grande (13-minute walk)’.
Which is it 15 minutes, 3 minutes or near to?
The honest answer – none of these.
Villa Gabrisa is located in an area nowhere near the main shops, restaurants and beaches. From Villa Gabrisa you can’t even see the beaches or main shopping areas.
Villa Gabrisa is at the top of and around the side of a hill away from the Positano you see on all the photographs of Positano. It is detached from the main parts of Positano.
On our first day we decided to walk to the beach and having asked Villa Gabrisa the quickest way we then proceeded down numerous steps (with people walking up them gasping for breath and absolutely exhausted) and along ‘The Long and Winding Road’, downhill all the way, until we eventually reached the Church of Santa Maria Assunta after 35 minutes. We were so tired we couldn’t manage the further 5 to10 minutes to the beach. I hate to think how long and how tired we would have been walking uphill all the way to Villa Gabrisa. I don’t think it is probably possible at all, never mind in 15 minutes.
To emphasise the inaccuracies in the description by Villa Gabrisa, on arrival we are told that there is a bus which takes 10 minutes to get to Piazza dei Mulini while it takes 15 minutes walking. After our first day experience we HAD TO catch the bus each day which took 15 minutes each time to reach Piazza dei Mulini with a 10 minute walk to reach Spiaggia Grande beach. That’s 25 minutes by bus.
I am at a loss how a Hotel can be allowed to misrepresent itself so much. How have they been allowed to say ‘This property is 3 minutes walk from the beach’ on Hotels.com?
The other awful aspect of Villa Gabrisa is dining a few feet away from the constant noise and awful traffic fumes of none stop traffic passing between the hotel and pavement restaurant. We sat 3 feet from cars and mopeds belching out choking fumes throughout our meal.
From the comments we read the restaurant was good. What we didn’t appreciate was that most reviews remarked on the view being good – not the food. In all honesty the meal was average at best and the dearest we had in 14 days touring the Amalfi coast and dining in some of the best restaurants we have ever eaten in.. Our meal on the first night was poor. We each had 5 pieces of overcooked squid and 2 prawns for €22, horrible meatballs for €16 and 5 of the smallest pieces of grilled fish I’ve ever seen and a few roasted vegetables for €28. The wine was ok but expensive and the Long island Ice Tea was more like diluted coke. After this overpriced (€145) poor meal eaten surrounded by noisy cars and fumes we ate elsewhere and had better food at half the price around the many restaurants around the Spiaggia Grande and beach. On top of this the service was inconsistent with waiters dodging traffic with food being carried through traffic fumes. Ristorante Bagni Delfino in Sorrento was better food, better view and great service at almost half the price.
All in all poor food, service and terrible location but good views at a premium cost.
I suppose all reviews are to a degree comparative with other places visited, previous experiences and expectations.
Villa Gabrisa is no better than poor in all but the view at a very overblown price.

Room Tip: Roadside rooms with sea views suffer from car fumes when sitting outside.

We recently had the pleasure of staying 6 nights at the Hotel Villa Gabrisa in Positano. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome by the lovely Leyla, who, after a complimentary glass of prosecco, took us to our room and gave us a run down on the mod cons etc. The breakfasts were perfect for a big day in Positano, and you have the option of dining in the restaurant or sitting outside enjoying the spectacular views of the ocean and beautiful town of Positano (breakfast, lunch or dinner).

During our stay the staff could not have done enough for us, as well as complimentary beach towels and assisting with day trips and transfers.

In summary this family run hotel is a little gem and we would like to thank, Robyn, Leonello, Isabella, Gabriel and Leyla, for making our stay at the Villa Gabrisa a wonderful experience

It was beautiful, quaint and convenient but not in the town. We could walk to the town. It was well maintained, the food was delicious and the setting fabulous. I would definitely stay there again. They even packed us breakfast on the day we left.

Our Fifth year at this exceptional family run hotel. Book nice and early, however If you cannot get a room ensure that if you are staying in Positano that you eat at their lovely restaurant - You will not be disappointed. An exceptional Family hotel. If you walk up and down on the road to the beach everyday then you will always be fit and slim !!!

Room Tip: Room 5 has a nice big balcony

This is our home from home hotel, we have stayed here many times and I cannot state enough what a wonderful base this can be for your stay in Positano.
It’s family run, every room had the most fantastic view and the staff/family can’t do enough for you.
Yes we have become regulars but we would not repeat our visits if we were not happy.
It’s in the higher part of the town but not far enough away from all of the amenities, it’s a short walk to the main beach or get the bus as it stops right outside the hotel.
The restaurant also has the best views plus a large inside section should you need it, the food is excellent and drinks choice extensive.
The locals have only good things to say regarding this hotel so that is something to take into account.
With a view like this what more can you ask for?
Thank you to our adopted Italian family we will miss you.
