we had a difficult time deciding between this hotel and le sirenuse. after visiting, we think we made the right decision. le sirenuse is in the center of town, which is nice - and the restaurant is very good (the pool area is super small). however, we loved the quiet of being just outside of the city propper and all of the tourist congestion. the main pros are the views, the quiet and the amazing water front area for swimming and sunning (that le sirenuse lacks).. you take an elevator through the cliff all the way to the edge of the sea and there is a ledge with loungers and a bar. it is fantastic. we spent every day there. reading, relaxing and jumping into the sea. it was phenomenal. we had a standard room and it was excellent. the only con was that we were at the beginning of the hall and with the tile floors you could hear people walking by. the rooms were not super luxurious, but the views made up for it. the bathroom tub was a little odd( circular), but we didnt mind with the rest of the experience was so phenomenal. we took a private boat out for a full day back to capri to swim and then up to amalfi. it was a wonderful way to see the coast and so much fun. the hotel arranged it and prepared lunch, snacks and drinks. it was a special stay and we would definitely return to this hotel over all the others in positano. highly recommend it. a unique and special spot on earth.

Room Tip: far from the lobby

the iI san Pietro is a little piece of paradise ... we travelled here after spending five days in Venice and it was fabulous. We didnt get a special honeymoon welcome .. which was a little disappointing .. and we didn't get a special room [ours overlooked the garden not the sea which would have been nicer] .. but I guess that's what happens when you book the cheapest room in a hotel that could justify charging what it wants for the location! Just to be clear .. it is built into the rock face on the rugged coast of the Amalfi .. looking out over the Med .... [I think we paid about £650 per night !!!]. but this was really the only fault .... so the amazing bits ... drinks on the terrace at sunset looking over the Med. All the flowers .. everywhere! ..The breakfast ... lovely filling fresh delicious ... and its great watching the variety of glamourous Missoni clad ladies. The daily 11H00 boat trip along the coast ... with swimming to the Emerald Cave, Sangria, nibbles fluffy towels and a great commentary on the coast. The restaurant next to the beach: fresh delicious and great service [and the wine is amazingly good value!] .. the sun terrace next to the beach .. virtually unheard of on the Amalfi coast .. the beach .. even rarer. the little bus to and from Positiano .. available on demand .. excellent after one too many glasses of wine in town ... The hotel itself is not modern .. don't expect up to date fixtures and fittings .. the restaurant does not look as fabulous as it should [but the food is wonderful] but I doubt it will be modernised soon .. this hotel is about the amazing location and service and I couldn't have asked for more on our honeymoon!

Our overall experience at the hotel was really good and I would definitely go back. I might try some other hotels in the area too though.

Pros:
1. Breathtaking views from all over the property and also from our room.
2. The room was nice with a big bathroom and jacuzzi tub.
3. The pool area was nice and relaxing with another great view of the mountains and water as well as friendly staff (Pasquale).
4. Service was overall great, which is kind of expected for the price.
5. Free shuttle service! Which was a must because it's hard to walk anywhere without the risk of getting hit by a car on the narrow mountain roads.
6. Great SPA area with all the typical SPA services.
7. Private beach area which was great.
8. Free boat services to certain locations.
9. Peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Cons:
1. Lesson learned, don't leave food anywhere because the ants will find it. The staff cleaned it up within minutes though.
2. Cost to dine at the hotel was very expensive for a small quantity of OK food. Venturing out for meals was our preference.
3. The beds were hard, which is not my personal preference.

The service, food, and over all beauty at Il San Pietro is unparalleled! If you are in Positano OR the Amalfi Coast, this place is a MUST DO!!! (Also, if youve got gluten allergies, such as myself, phone ahead, as there will be a treat in store for you, as they are very accommodating!!) Warning: After eating here, and eating out anywhere else after the Il San Pietro Experience, youre heart may experience a dull pain just knowing how foods should and can be cooked. Buena Sera!!!

I can't say enough good things about my experience at San Pietro. The stunning views, the unique way it was built into the cliffs, that unbelievable sun deck that you can jump off of into the sea...just one of the most special hotels I have ever stayed in.

The boat ride that leaves from the sun deck every day at 11am was far and away my favorite part of our stay. They take you in a different direction each day and give you about 30 minutes to swim in the sea before heading back to the hotel with a drink of sangria and a snack of olives and nuts.

One observation I had was that many of the other guests were from the East Coast - particularly the New York area! We actually observed this all over the Amalfi Coast, not just San Pietro. Not a deterring factor for me...but just a funny side note. Even so we still felt far from home!

And as a final note, the shuttle service into town was very reliable. I felt it was very worth it to stay 10 minutes outside of town to take advantage of the resort feel of the hotel.

Room Tip: If you don't like your room ask to see another - they are very accommodating about switching!
