“Minor negatives only; good quality for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2011

My wife and I spent 6 days at grand hotel porto cervo in a garden view room in August 2011.

Overall:
= good quality for price (based on higher sardinia price level)
= no major disadvantage

What we liked:
+ room v clean and although we booked a garden room, the room had also partial seaview
+ hotel w good infrastructure eg free wifi at restaurant/ breakfast area
+ pool area v nice with some beautiful secluded spots where you can enjoy scenery in a bit more silence
+ small beach right in front of hotel (however, seaweed is washed onto beach)
+ location: close to porto cervo and baja sardinia
+ lunch at the hotel has relatively reasonable prices
+ sufficient parking space
+ beach and dinner recommendations from hotel staff were excellent

What we disliked (mostly minor points)
- no wifi outside restaurant/ entrance area
- you have to pay 5 euro if you want an extra beach towel
- breakfast rather continental w limited healthy options (eg no vegetables/tomatoes, no fresh orange juice, limited local products offered)
- directly on the beach: the beach beds do not belong to the hotel. We had to pay 20 euro per bed
- Dinner at the a la carte restaurant Orange was mediocre (service was slow, a bit pricy for the quality). There r better options outside of the hotel (eg lorenzo, hivaoa)
- the hotel recommended a private half day boat trip which ended up to be run by a semi-professional operator (can not go into more details here). Make sure you have a contract when you book the trip and make sure the contract specify ALL the costs and the skipper speaks English (if u do not speak italian)

Considering the hotel is four star only, most of these points are no real negatives.

Lovely hotel, fabulous pool with plenty of comfortable sun beds. Breakfast great, varied and good quality. Staff very helpful and friendly. You will need a car to get around and suggest you book thus prior to arriving for a better deal. Ample parking at the hotel. Sardinia great island with loads to see and great beaches with crystal clear sea. Would thoroughly recommend a visit.

We enjoyed to stay at the GH, best value for money (at least in May or June), really good breakfast and really nice staff that are reliable and help you anytime with some hints or some great adresses to have a nice meal or to visit a nice spot....Of course renting a car is ,for me mandatory as a Taxi may cost you almost more than your hotel room if you wish to discover this island !!!!
Again good location if you fancy la marina or chic shops in Porto cervo. As we did, you can practise Yoga in the GH and enjoy at the same time this small and almost private beach. We will be back !

We spent one week at this hotel expecting a "Grand" hotel but were disappointed. The hotel is beautiful and in a spectacular location, however the service was not grand at all. The staff were arrogant and not friendly. I've never been to a four star that had us pay the full stay upon arrival. The room was tiny and uncomfortable. I had to ask the bed linen to be changed when we got there! The food was very plain and nothing to write home about. The breakfast was equivalent to a 2 star Italian hotel, and there was never enough staff to serve all the people at breakfast. Tons of people waiting for coffee and tea all the time. The area around the pool had lounge chairs made of metal without cushions, or plush towels. The beach is just next to the hotel but the hotel does not provide any beach side service or help maintain the beach. In fact it was full of algae and no one was rushing to clean up the sand. All in all, it is a pity that such a beautiful location is so poorly managed: there are much better hotels in Porto Cervo for the same price!

The Grand Hotel is a great hotel in a great spot. The restaurant is superb, and the staff cannot do enough for you. The pool area is one of the best I have experienced, and the beach is also nice. Stunning views and close proximity to the Porto Cervo marina mean that it is an excellent place to stay whilst enjoying all that the Costa Smerelda has to offer.
This part of Sardinia is very beautiful, and some of the best times are to be had on a scooter, discovering hidden beaches and restaurants. I went for a week with my girlfriend in early September and had one of the best holidays ever. I do not have anything bad to say about the place whatsoever. There are a few caveats however if I was to be REALLY picky:

1.) The main season is August so it does get quiet in September. That was fine for us, but just be aware. The prices also drop off a bit, but it is still quite expensive (180 eoros for a standard meal and wine for 2).

2.) Some of the hotel rooms are bit small and some a bit dated. The new block is definitely the place to stay (and if you can afford a suite then go for it).

3.) Taxis are extortionate in Sardinia, so make sure you fly to Olbia (and arrange hire car/ scooter before you arrive).

Some minor points which in no way took from what was a fantastic trip.

Oh, and if you can afford it and fancy splashing out, definitely go to the Hotel Cala di Volpe for dinner.
