Booked through TUi and spent the third week of September here. We'd had a fantastic time in Limone at Lake Garda last year and this seemed the logical follow up. The town of Menaggio was dead with very little to do in the evenings and on two evenings we were told we had to leave the bar at the Hotel de Luc at 9.30 because they were closing early! So if you're planning a trip to Lake Como, Menaggio is probably not the best option. Veranna or Bellagio may be better. Having said that, Lake Como is beautiful and there was plenty to see and do during the day. Lots of villas and beautiful gardens as well as excursions to other lakes in the area that were well worthwhile. If you're UK National Trust members you can get discount at some villas on presentation of your membership card. We also did the excusion to St Moritz which although the scenery enroute was great the town was souless and full of expensive designer shops and very few people. Also the much hyped train trip to St Moritz fell way below expectations. We'd booked a balcony room overlooking the lake expecting to be able to relax on the balcony and view the lake, as you would. It turned out that you would have to be 9 feet tall to see the lake over the wall whilst seated. So felt cheated on that. The rooms were clean and adequate but fairly basic and dated. The cleaning lady was friendly and welcoming as were one or two of the ladies on the front counter, but the management was unfriendly and abrupt to the point of being rude. The real joke though was the dining room. The food was generally poor and some of the serving staff rude. We'd chosen half board. Breakfast was bland and unappetising. Some dinner meals were okay but you got the impression that you were a nuisance and not really welcome. This made some sense when we complained to the TUi rep who said that the resaurant had recently been sold off and was no longer owned by the hotel. Obviously the new owners resented having to fulfill the contracted obligations and apparently were offering a EU15 discount if you ate in the restaurant proper. On our return one of our party complained and TUi offered some compensation against a future trip.

Room Tip: Request a room with balcony with lake views when seated :)

We stayed here with TUI, a few positives; great lake view and location, nice town with plenty going on and the bus and ferries stop close by so you can get about. One member of staff was welcoming and the housekeepers were friendly and do a great job.

The negatives far outweigh that though.
Thoroughly miserable, scowling management.
Shambolic, miserable waiting staff.
Diabolically awful food if on half board, and you have to order a day ahead
Worn out and dated furnishings and fittings
Same breakfast every day, with the same reconstituted lurid juice drink
Air con that hardly made any difference
The list goes on, pretty much same as other comments

Fortunately TUI were very understanding and handled our feedback well, but I hope they abandon this awful place next season, and would suggest that anyone thinking of staying there does the same!

Room Tip: Avoid if you can, otherwise get a lake view

Nice Hotel not all rooms have a balcony as some people state. The management never spoke to me in the two week stay.Good was shocking boiled tongue boiled beef dried beef just a sample. Its so bad Inghams are only doing B&B next year.Very annoyed that Ingams sent me there this Sept knowing how bad the food was.lovely position nice views if you have a balcony.Kept being moved to back rooms so the posh guest wouldn't get cold.Never again.

Room Tip: single rooms are at the back of the Hotel not much if a view and noisy Rd.

This is a three star hotel with one star management. Let's start with the positives:The location of the hotel has views to die for with stunning views of beautiful Lake Como literally yards away, and that's it! Now the not so good points :The management team are the most rude and miserable i have ever encountered, the owner never smiled once and if you ever had the misfortune to go to reception when he was there then all you got was a shrug of the shoulders and an exasperated look on his face. As for his wife, she stared at you like you were something that she had just scraped off her shoe-come back Basil Fawlty all is forgiven! As for the waitress in the restaurant at breakfast, well she's obviously in the wrong job because she should have been a Bond villain! She must have received a full refund from the charm school she attended! There's obviously something going on re who owns what in the restaurant and hotel and you were definitely made to feel inferior if you were a holiday maker.I asked a waiter once for two coffees and he just sighed and said "too busy".Loved Mennagio and Lake Como but wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone, they really don't deserve any business with their awful attitude
