Were drawn to Lecce by the architecture and the terrain, the latter a major change from the hill towns of Sicily where we had just spent 9 days. Selected Roof Barocco for our 4 nights in Lecce based a lot on Trip Advisor reviews. Had a number of communications with Elisabetta from the time of reservation to shortly before arrival. All responses were timely and useful. One of the exchanges involved directions to the B&B. I picked directions off Via Michelin and asked Elisabetta if that route would work. Her response was amusing, something like 'Yes, those will work if you want to travel on foot.' And in that response she provided better directions.
We drove from Taormina, quite a long day but not too challenging. A small toll charge from Taormina to Messina and then the ferry to Villa San Giovanni - believe that fare was 35 euros.
As we neared Lecce, I realized that our Garmin had calculated a different route from that of Elisabetta or Via Michelin. Followed the Garmin until it wanted to take us the wrong way on a one way street for the third time. Pulled Elisabetta's route out of my file. From that I programmed our Garmin to route us via the intersection of Viale Francesco Lo Re and Via Duca degli Abruzzi. It was then clear sailing to the property, including the very abrupt left hander onto Vico del Sole. Recommend anyone arriving by car do exactly that. And, there were a few open parking spaces on the piazzetta, a good thing. Rang the doorbell and we were buzzed in. Elisabetta met us at the door of her home, which is on the 2d floor of the building. A quick glance at her home and we knew our room would be incredible. If you get a chance, ask to see the tile floor of her dining room which dates to te early 18th century. Just beautiful.
After a few minutes to check in, she took us up to our room, the one bedroom unit with multiple terraces. Had seen so many pictures of it on Trip Advisor that we felt we had already been there. Everything was as described in word and photo. The wonderful tart on the table, a basket of goodies (coffee, olive oil, breads,a bag of taralli (which we had first encountered on an Alitalia flight earlier in this trip) and a stocked refrigerator which included among other things the largest kiwis we had ever seen - at first thought they may have been fuzzy potatoes.
Everything in the unit functioned properly - the AC/heater, TV and even a wireless router for internet access. Ask Elisabetta for the password - you will not be surprised when you hear it. But remember that you are in Puglia - so don't expect the internet to fly like it does in the US. We really liked the external shutters for the doors and window. Transformed the room into a private - and very quiet - sanctuary at night.
The terraces are beautifully adorned with potted plants and offer views of old Lecce that you cannot get from ground level - this is especially true of the duomo's bell tower.
The location is absolutely perfect for foot exploration of old Lecce - and we did a lot of that. But while on the terraces we enjoyed the simple things, which I haven't seen much mention of on this site - the acrobatics of the swallows in the mornings and evenings and the vehicles maneuvering into and out of the piazzetta below us - almost like a live example of the Towers of Hanoi.
On the first morning, a basket was delivered to our door with fabulous croissants - the cream filled one was the best we have ever tasted and plump, sweet strawberries. What a start for a great day. And a hour later, a gardener was trimming the plants on the terrace - not just a gardener, but Elisabetta's husband.
We had planned to hit a number sights around Puglia, but found the B&B and Lecce so enchanting that we decided just to stay there and relax.
Just a wonderful experience and can't imagine why one would stay anywhere else.
Grazie mille to Elisabetta and her family for being perfect hosts and making our stay in Lecce truly memorable.
