The hotel has an impressive entry with palms and the feeling of an old palace. It is directly on the beach and has a bar and a restaurant. The rooms are old but clean and well in shape. The whole hotel has an aura of a glorious past.
However:
Breakfast: as they were preparing the restaurant for a wedding we had to sit in rather hot and airless corner and could not enjoy the view of the beach and the garden -it seems that there are weeding rather often there
Room: while the room was ok be sure that you ask for one that has a sea view as otherwise the only view is to the street -which is rather laud.
Beach and pool: The pool was nice but it closes at 6 pm. The same for the private beach.
Location: A car or Taxi are needed to get anywhere (the hotel is something like 30 minutes walking distance from the city)
Service: This was probably the worst part. I must have met there the most arrogant and unfriendly receptionist ever. While she spoke acceptable English asking it seems that if you are not dressed like a millionaire you will not get a friendly smile. Also, do not try to stay a second longer after the official checkout time. For the first time in my live I was called at 12:00 to be reminded that I should be leaving.
Formia: Not much of a tourist attraction if have the choice continue to either Napoli or Rome and stay there

I have been staying at this hotel for over 20 years... my father who is Italian and lives in Rome has been coming here for over 50 years. This hotel is absolutely beautiful and a true hidden gem. I am sure part of my enchantment with this hotel has to do with my emotional attachment to Formia.... it is equidistant from Rome and Naples... Naples and its surroundings (Capri, Ischia, Pompei) are easily accessible... Naples can be seen on a clear day from some of the rooms.. Hotel Miramare is relaxing and for me is a true sanctuary. The staff is super friendly and accomodating. The food is exceptional and is evidenced by the fact that mostly Italians and Europeans come here. In addition, this used to be the summer home of the king and queen of Italy (when there was a monarchy in Italy). You cannot beat the value... the pensione completa is the best deal... room and all 3 meals included... I prefer the food here to the local restaurants in Formia anyway...

I loved the hotel it was so old world charm i would def stay here again. we arrived at 3am in the morning from our flight from rome and the man at the front door was there to greet us WHICH WAS FANTASTIC BEING AT 3AM the breakfast was great and the view was great too. We went in the winter so i cant tell you much about the beach and the pool. I loved the bed it was comforable and the room was warm heating and I cant say anything bad at all i would def stay here again

We stayed in this hotel for three nights at the end of September. The rooms themselves, albeit old fashioned, were clean as was the bathroom.
The hotel has a beautiful location on the beach so if you are a sun worshipper this would be ideal. For the elderly there are a number of steps which you have to use to get to the beach. The pool is also nice however it is small.
The breakfasts were not the most exciting and very limited. The staff themselves were not the most helpful or friendly.
The main problem with this hotel is that there is absolutely nothing to do. If you want somewhere to eat outside of the hotel you have to walk into Formia which is about a 25 minute walk. There is a pizza restaurant which is about a 5 minute walk but this is not always open and only serve pizza after 7pm.
We found Formia and the hotel rather boring and would not recommend the hotel or Formia to anyone travelling around Italy.

I stayed at the Grande Albergo Miramare for a week in June, it was my wedding. It is a beautiful hotel, I thought the staff where great, very friendly although not a lot of them could speak english but it wasnt a problem. Yes I agree with one of the reviews that the steps to the beach are far to many for old people, even the pool is a good few steps down. There are beautiful gardens and seating areas around the hotel for older people. The town is basic, there are some lovely restuarants and a couple of fun bars, try the budda bar only 10 minutes walk into the old town, it will stay open as long as you want, the hotel bar closes early and is expensive as are most hotel bars.
Over all it is a beautiful old italian hotel, if it is an Irish wedding your going to then you will have a great time anyway with the added plus of beautiful weather and a fab view.
