Food was good home cooking. Staff friendly and they actually reduced my bill at the end which was appreciated. Go here rather than the one up the road.

We have been fortunate enough to visit wonderful Tuscany, and notably Castellina-in-Chianti, once or twice a year for several years and on each and every occasion visit many local eateries. The restaurant is located on the SR222 Chiantigiana as you leave Castellina-in-Chianti travelling south toward Fonerutoli .
We first sampled La Chiantina Osteria a few years ago, when we visited with our great friends Marco & Giovanna who, at the time were living in near Fonterutoli. On the recollection of that enjoyable experience we thought that we would visit the restaurant ourselves (just the two of us this time) during our stay in the town this year (Aug 2015).
We noticed some artwork on the wall from a reputable (and some would say mildly eccentric) local artist, and indeed he did turn up later as we were leaving.
We were greeted warmly (it was the night of a thunderstorm and we were once of the first diners that evening although the restaurant soon filled with predominately local people which is often a good sign). Our starter course was a relatively simple affair of meat and cheese served with deep fried pizza dough balls, the house-wine was very drinkable and the waiter was personable, attentive and helpful. All in all things were looking good. Regrettably it seem to go downhill from there.
We began to wonder if there had been a change of ownership since our last visit (during 2013), or whether the main chef was having a night off on this occasion. Despite an order of “medium and still pink” beef, my wife’s main course meat and onion dish was a disappointing plate of overcooked (potentially reheated?) braising steak under a pile of long pre-prepared onion marmalade, and my dish of assorted fried meats (the menu said a combination of chicken and rabbit) appeared purely to be further extensive use of the deep fat fryer with a plate of battered bones and a few oily and battered tired vegetables. We had also asked for a plate of potatoes to accompany our meat dishes, and this dish only served to confirm the kitchens obvious delight in using their deep-fat fryer to produce some oily chips. (As such everything I consumed in my main course had found its way to my plate via the deep-fat fryer, which on reflection is very unusual for Italian cuisine). Some might say I could have chosen something more indigenous I suppose, but I remain convinced that “Carni Fritto Misto” is a Tuscan dish and there are far better versions of it !
In view of the disappointing secondi platers we decided to cut our loses and not try a dessert or even coffee. We are lucky enough to know many places in the town that serve very good coffee, desserts or gelato.
We are concerned that this restaurant has slipped down the list but we hope for the sake of future diners that this was just a one-off bad night for somewhere that has a great location

Nice Restaurant and Pizzeria. We have been twice in La Chiantina during our stay in Castellina, one for lunch (restaurant) and one for dinner (pizzeria) and they have both times exceeded our expectation either in terms of service and food quality. For lunch we ordered two dishes of the day, out of the menu, a burratina with prosciuto (very, very good) and tortellini fit with ricotta and pomodoro (sublim). When for pizza, we ordered some white pizza (without tomato) that were execellent. Both times they included more than a ten percent discount in our bill, even without asking for it!!

The parking is convenient, which is the reason we stopped there. The service was good. But that's the only positive aspect of our lunch there. While it is called ristorante pizzeria, no pizza on the menu. We took pasta pomodoro: the pasta were not as good as what we cook ourselves. Not much taste, not made with any care. And that was expensive.

In brief, do not eat there.
