“A flight on the roofs of Agrigento”
Reviewed 9 June 2012

My wife and I stayed at "Terrazze di Montelusa" at the end of May. This B&B is located in one of the most charming piazzas of Agrigento, and it occupies the last two floors of what used to be the Hotel Bella Napoli, one of the oldest hotels in Agrigento. The place is absolutely immaculate, having been recently renovated with the latest amenities. Our room was airy and silent. The second floor of the B&B has three large balconies ("terrazze") with an absolutely spectacular view of the roofs of Agrigento and the Valle dei Templi in the distance. To sit there makes you feel like flying on the roofs of Agrigento, and inspires a contemplative mood.

The B&B owner and host, Francesco, deserves a special mention as he has a rather extraordinary talent for hospitality. When we reached the B&B, he sat us down on a terrazza and served us fantastic sweets and coffee. He introduced us to other travellers, helping us feel truly at home. The breakfasts were amazing, with Francesco showing up with sudden surprises, traditional Sicilian cakes and the like. In essence, our memory of Agrigento is inextricably linked with our experience at Terrazze di Montelusa. Staying there was like visiting a friend.

We started getting messages from our host Francesco two days before we were due to arrive, with instructions of how to best find this, almost hidden gem. Despite Francesco's valiant attempts at direction, our party of four missed a turn and got lost. We contacted Francesco and got re-oriented and found the little piazza that fronts the entrance to the B&B. As per all of Sicily, there was of course, no available parking. Francesco immediately called in his chips with neighbors and friends and got enough cars moved to make a space for our rental car in the piazza. It is an easy three level walk to the B&B salon and rooms and well worth every step to avail yourself of the well appointed rooms and reception area.

The rooms were airy, spacious and comfortable. The sitting area was a nice place to plan the day and filled with historical and practical literature in both Italian and English. The terrace and breakfast area was a perfect start to the day with tasty delights, a variety of coffees, and one of the most stunning views in all of Agrigento. We started our first day arrival, mid-afternoon, by settling into our rooms and then accepting an invitation for aperitifs on the terrace with Francesco. This was just the beginning of the unparalleled helpfulness and cordiality we experience with our host Francesco during our two day stay in Agrigento. He served as an excellent tour guide, restaurant critic, historical re-counter, pianist to our swooning wives, wonderful conversationalist, and most of all the owner of the best valued B&B in Agrigento.

Besides the wonderful host and very nice accommodations, you will find the B&B in a quaint and central part of the city, only a downhill block from Agrigento's main boulevard, with many restaurants, historical sites, and attractions within walking distance, and convenient to public transportation to Valley of the Temples and Archeological Museum.

If you want to experience the World Heritages Sites of Agrigento, stay at Terrazza di Montelusa, the best value B&B in the area, and be hosted by the most generous, charming, knowledgeable and accommodating owner in Agrigento.

What I have to say about Terrazze di Montelusa has been said many times before, but is worth saying again: this is a real find in Agrigento. In fact, it is the kind of place where you really are reluctant to say goodbye, both to the elegant and comfortable surroundings and to Francesco, who is a sensitive, helpful and charming host.

Our room was the suite at the end of the hall. It featured a good-sized sitting room off which was a small terrace, a large bedroom and very adequate bath. Unfortunately, there was little in the way of a view, but we were out much of the time anyway.

Breakfast on the top floor's terraces was delightful: a fresh assortment of baked goods made both on the premises and brought in by Francesco. At night, several of the Temples could be seen illuminated from the top terrace, particularly Concordia.

Clean, with a faded elegance (nothing brassy or plastic), this is Francesco's family's former home. As a parting gift, Francesco sat at the piano and played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. You can't buy memories like this.

It was tough to leave.

Not easy to find, but well worth it. The B&B is a delight and so is Francesco! Lovely warm decor, and beautiful views from the terraces. Breakfast is quite nice and Francesco's special freshly baked treats are delicious. Only wish there was a lift, as we had to go up 3 floors with 4 suitcases, which was our choice, because we were the only room on the floor and quite private. Francesco did help, which I thought was very nice of him. Really enjoyed our stay here.

My friend and I stayed two nights at this lovely little bed and breakfast in Agrigento. The service was above and beyond what you usually expect. The Proprietor, Francisco, carried our bags, offered us tea on the terrace, when we came in weary and tired, and brought in fresh baked goods for breakfast.

I have celiac disease, and he immediately had a supply of gluten free products for my breakfast.

The rooms and beautiful and nicely decorated, with comfortable beds, modern private bathrooms. The proprietor also educated us on seeing the sites of Agrigento and helped us with bus trips etc., as we were not driving.
