“Amazing - don't miss it”

We spent six weeks travelling around the Caribbean the week we had at Bunkum Beach House was the absolute highlight. of the trip in many ways. It was also one of the cheapest places we stayed which just goes to show, the flashiest and most expensive hotels are not always the best.

We arrived at night on the ferry. The lovely Sunny was there to pick us up, stopping off at a supermarket so we could get a few supplies. We later met Sunny's wife Christina, and they were honestly the best hosts you could ask for - always around when we needed them but still giving us heaps of privacy.

The house is simply furnished but very comfortable, with a great kitchen (we cooked pretty much every night) and lovely verandah overlooking the ocean. We stayed in the larger room in the main house, which had a huge, very comfortable bed, lots of cupboard space and a private ensuite bathroom. There is a second room in the main house and a third room in the poolhouse, so we shared the space with one or two other guests, but it never felt crowded.

The pool is amazing - right on the edge of the cliff, the perfect place for sipping cocktails as the sun goes down! You could spend whole days just lounging around and reading by the pool, watching out for the iguanas and hummingbirds that live in the garden. However, there is also loads to do in Montserrat. Before we arrived, we thought seven nights might be too long, but we ended up wishing we could stay longer. It's a really friendly, relaxing place. I think because of the volcano it hasn't been overrun with tourists as much as the other islands nearby, which is great if you like to get poff the beaten track (less great if you want to hang out in all-inclusive resorts - which we didn't!).

We were there over New Years when the big annual festival is on and loads of expats return to the island to catch up with friends and family. there are limited nubers of hire cars available so Sunny ended up arranging for us to borrow his dad''s car - very kind of them both! It cost us around USD $200 for a week, a total bargain. we spent many happy days driving up into the twisty mountain roads, stopping to pick mangoes on the side of the road or check out one of the many scenic walking trails. Make sure to visit the volcano obvservatory as well, and if you can, take a tour with Sunny into the exclusion zone - it was fascinating and he is truly an excellent guide.

Bunkum Beach House would be an awesome place for a family group or three couples, you could hire out the whole thing and have it all to yourselves. Otherwise, it was great for couples or singles, although I would recommend hiring a car as the buses and taxis are pretty unreliable. althogh, there was a single lady staying when we were there and every time she went to wait for the bus on the main road, a local pulled up and give her a lift! Montserrat is a magical place, don't miss it.

Beautiful view with beautiful caregivers. This villa is in an excellent location on Montserrat. The sunsets from the cliff are just grand! The bed was comfortable and the room light and airy. The service was very friendly. I recommend.

“Somewhere special”

Our stay here was very special. We received a very warm welcome at Montserrat's small airport from Jo who could not have been more helpful. She even stopped on the way to the guest house so that we could buy groceries.
We stayed in the delightful pool-side room which was very well equipped and even included beach mats and beach towels. The communal kitchen is very well equipped and a large space is reserved in the fridge for each of the three rooms. The swimming pool is a very welcome facility with its fantastic views of Redondo and Nevis. The wifi is free.
We enjoyed meeting the other guests and even went out to dinner all together to Ziggy's where we enjoyed a great meal. We also ate at Olveston Manor which was very good and very friendly and Tina's which was very reasonably priced. On Saturday evening we had an entertaining time at Soca Cabanas.
Jo organised a tour of Plymouth which was well worth doing as we visited places that we could not see with the rental car. Otherwise the small size of the island makes getting around easy as it is almost impossible to get lost and if you do the friendly locals all go out of the way to help you.
Montserrat is not your typical Caribbean island but is definitely worth the extra effort of getting there. It is safe, pretty and thankfully, uncommercialized. If you are lucky enough to go I would highly recommend Bunkum Beach for its views, friendliness and delightful rooms.

“Absolutely fabulous”

I could not say enough good things about this guest house. It was sensational. Set on a good parcel of land the house is private and stocked with everything you could possibly want. The view is spectacular and the iguanas are charming. We started every morning feeding the iguanas on the lawn and lounging around our private pool while deciding where we would go for lunch. It was the perfect getaway for anyone who wants to R and R in the sun. Can't wait to get back there. Already planning for a month next year. The owners could not be more helpful or obliging and it was the PERFECT retreat!
