“Delightful holiday house in fabulous location”

This was our 8th holiday in La Ruine which says everything. While 17th century in origen it has been lovingly restored and is very comfortable. The balcony overlooks the vineyards and hills and is a great place to dine in the evening. It is only a short walk to the village where there are very good grocery, bakers and butcher’s shops.
There are many walks from the door but short drives take you to some wonderful historic villages and other walks in very varied and amazing countryside.
We consider ourselves discerning holiday makers and cannot recommend La Ruine highly enough if you want an authentic rural French self catering experience with plenty of great walking.

“Low Quality Rental Home - Renter beware and read the conditions!”

This quaint house was unclean and required updating. It was situated in beautiful unspoiled countryside surrounded by vineyards. It was advertised as a 5 minute walk from Montpeyroux to the outskirts of LeBarry. This is where the gite was situated but almost one Km from there! Therefore 5 mins was probably 20mins and uphill!
The crockery was greasy, the chopping boards were deeply marked and quite unhygienic. The BBQ was a disaster and besides being almost untouchable, owing to the grease and rust, appeared quite unsafe with one of the internal burners at a very strange angle. The garden furniture was well past its sell by date and the missing cushions were obviously part of a detective game. (They were found after 5 days).
I complained to the agent and did receive compensation but this did not make up for a spoiled holiday.
The agent pointed out that in the small print of the letting conditions, there was a clause stating that "The property is not an official tourist structure, business or hotel and is a private residence provided by the owner solely for use for a holiday on a self-catering basis. The client further accepts that the property does not conform to internationally recognised standards but reflects the architecture, furnishings and location as well as local traditions meeting the personal standards and taste of the owner. The client should avoid making comparisons with other property or standards in their country of residence or as experienced elsewhere."
If I had spotted this I would never have rented this property.
In conclusion, the owners should be ashamed of themselves for not keeping this attractive gite up to date and employing someone who can clean..

We were disappointed that the house did not meet your expectations. There was no excuse for the lack of cleanliness for which we apologise and have taken steps to ensure that this does not happen again. The house is regularly updated, this year included a new stove, sofa and king sized bed. The BBQ is a gas BBQ although it's use may not be familiar to everyone, but it is in good working condition. We shall take steps to ensure everyone is aware of where the cushions are stocked. The house is very popular with many happy guests who return every year but we accept not all houses are suited to everyone which was certainly your experience. Google maps estimates that it is 800 m to the centre of the village or 10 mins at a normal walking pace, in general we consider this to be a short walk away although some of the distance is uphill.

“Mesmerizing and meditative”
Reviewed 3 November 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We ended our summer visit to France by staying in Le Barry at La Ruine. It was perfect for my husband, myself, our teenage daughter and her friend. Le Barry itself is magical and people who live there are really friendly. Being so close to Pont du Diable, and various markets in the area was great - plus Montpeyroux --just steps away, has everything one could want, including restaurants, a grocery store, boulangerie and a hair salon. The best part was coming home at the end of our day, to supper outside on the terrace. Looking out at the Ceyvennes, be it evening or early morning was mesmerizing and meditative. The owners chose a perfect location. We loved looking through the binder of renovations, then looking at the house itself - what a transformation!
