Beautiful location for cabins!

Review of Brimnes Cabins
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Aug 2014
We enjoyed one of Brimnes three bedroom cabins for three nights. The cabins are located right on the edge of the lake and the view is simply stunning. Well appointed and very clean, the cabin even had a very well stocked kitchen that even included basic food staples. There is one bedroom on the main floor and the other two bedrooms are up very steep stairs... great for kids could be very tough for older folks. The bathroom is on the main level. It had hand soap but no toiletries for the shower. No hair dryer, but when I asked the following day, they gave me one to use. The towels need to be replaced, they are not quality towels and are very rough, but they told me towels were on order and are all being replaced so that's a good thing. TV only has the local Icelandic channel, so don't plan on watching TV while you're here. They have fishing poles, boats and kayaks to use. The fishing poles were messed up, but after my 11 year old nicely harassed them for a day and a half, they put new line on one for him to use!

We arrived very late on check in day because my navigation decided to take us off roading through the mountains, which was gorgeous but long and deserted. As stated before, there is nothing much to this town and there was no place to eat, so the lady that checked us in also kindly made burgers and fries for us. Once moved in, we enjoyed the hot tub on the front deck. Easy to fill, fun to use.

Yes, there is not much to this town. If I had been a little more familiar with the area, we probably would have stayed in Akureyri, but it certainly wouldn't have been as charming. Just keep in mind while in Iceland, if you are trying to get in a lot of sights, you have a significant amount of driving in store, regardless of where you stay. Akureyi was only about 45 minutes away, Dalvik for whale watching and Grimsey boats is 15 minutes away, and Siglufjordur is about 15 minutes away with some nice restaurants and a herring and folk museum.

If you are looking for something besides basic accommodations, this is a very fun choice!

Magnificent location. Cabins are clean, warm and functional. Kayaks and rowboats available a few feet from the cabin so that the lake is easily accessible. Staff were warm, kind and decent. This is a rustic location. Walking through the town at night was lovely. Highly recommended if you know and understand what you're looking to do in this region of northern Iceland.

We had one of the three-bedroom cabins with a perfect view of the fjord - fabulous, especially as we happened to be there during a beautiful period weather-wise. The cabins are pretty well-equipped, and the hot pot on the terrace very welcome, but don't expect anything on the TV unless your Icelandic is better than mine! Good wifi coverage, which will be much appreciated for uploading your amazing photos of all you've seen each day :-).

All that said, though, you need to be aware that the town is pretty underwhelming in summer (maybe better if you're there for skiing) and it takes a long time to get anywhere so not a good location as a base if you want to visit Akureyri and further East.

Room tip: No information on the hotel itself - we stayed in the chalets nearby. Our chalet was spacious, but quite expensive given the location - you get what you pay for (equivalent of 240 euro a night).

The bungalows are comfortable and well-equipped; having a bath in the hot tub was awesome, and a tour in Canoe in the bay was a great experience. The staff was very friendly and nice. We would highly recommend visitors interested in a stay in that nice place.

Room tip: The bungalows are absolutely great

Cabins are big and with 3 bedrooms (up to 7 beds). Nevertheless, the two room upstairs are very unpractical. The stair is pretty ridicolous, 59 degrees steep. Dinner and breakfast of very low quality.
