“Maesywerngoch Farmhouse - Lord of the Manor. Idyllic getaway in Wales”
Reviewed 12 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Maesywerngoch Farmhouse
Machynlleth, Wales

This was a birthday getaway for Nancy and we were thrilled with our experience. The home is stunning and has been immaculately renovated and is spotlessly clean. The views are truly spectacular. The fresh mountain air is divine. The gardens, brook, and pond provided acres of surprises to explore. The estate is surrounded by miles of well documented trails for the serious hiker. Shorter hikes were perfect for us. With six beautifully furnished bedrooms and 4 modern bathrooms, this striking home would comfortably accommodate a very large family or gathering of friends. The two of us felt like royalty walking the grounds and exploring the manor. Well stocked libraries, a beautiful two-story game and TV room (satellite and wifi), gourmet AGA stove kitchen, comfortable lawn furniture all combine to provide an upscale serene mountainside getaway experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and left refreshed and looking forward to our next visit. We will definitely bring our dogs next time. For anyone wanting more information we have included our Day One entry from our travel log.

21 June - Summer Solstice, Sunday, first national Yoga Day, and Father's Day

Day One
Train from Birmingham, UK, after a lovely night at the McDonalds Burlington Hotel. Don't miss dinner at the great Scottish Steak House on the first floor.

Arrived at the quaint Machynlleth train station. A beautiful twisting 15 minute ride through the forested hills of Snowdonia National Park to arrive at the Maesywerngoch Farmhouse on a stunning Welsh afternoon. Directions were perfect. The ever-climbing logging road winds through the valley and hugs a rocky creek as we ascend to our destination. We drive under an incredible Copper Beech tree - the red-purple leaves draping our car - and burst onto the farmhouse grounds. The term "farmhouse" is a magnificent understatement. This luxurious large manor is situated on a secluded hillside with sweeping panoramic views down the Dyfi valley. A curving rock stairway invites you to enter the elaborate private gardens of the multi-acre estate.

The farmhouse was built in the mid 1700's. No one we asked seemed to know exactly when. The property was sold at auction to the current family owners in 1976. Recently and extensively renovated, the estate consists of six bedrooms, which comfortably host 12 adults and kids. No rollaways required. What a splurge and treat for the two of us. A grand sitting room on one end of the wide farmhouse (grey room) and the sunny and bright two-story game room and TV room at the other end (red room) create separate private retreats joined by a large kitchen and dining/sitting room. The bedrooms are on the upper floor and the dining room/living room and gourmet kitchen are on the ground floor.

We enter the home through the main living room/dining room and are greeted by six floor to ceiling French doors and a room flooded with sunlight and breathtaking views of the deeply sloping valley floor below. A flower-lined stone stairway leads to an enormous lawn surrounded by the colorful garden. Lawn is not the proper word - rolling parkland is more accurate. Our dogs would love this place - a Frisbee-catcher’s paradise.

We quickly get settled in and explore the home and grounds. We are amazed by the large kitchen with one four-burner double oven stove and - get this - a bright red Aga stove nestled in the space of the original wood fireplace. We have friends who rave about their Aga but we had no experience with a stove that is always on but with no knobs or temperature controllers. Fortunately the kitchen library was stocked with two volumes on how to use the Aga and we prepared some memorable meals in the days ahead.

We walk outside to admire the grounds and garden and are greeted by warblers, wrens and sparrows squabbling for space and their turn in the bird feeders. A cool breeze, scattered fluffy clouds, fresh mountain air, impossibly blue skies, and the wide-open vista before us brought a sense of imediate belonging and serenity. As far as the eye can see, there is nothing man-made to be seen. No roads. No houses. No power-lines. Nothing. Only the natural beauty of Wales and the Dyfi valley. Paradise!

Nancy picks a complicated 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle from the many on offer and gets to work. I settle in with my chosen beach-read for the week.

It is the longest day of the year and we are getting hungry. Back into the Dyfi Forest for another winding jaunt to the village of Pennal and the Glan Yr Afon Riverside Pub. We find a bustling happy crowd of adults and kids enjoying their Sunday dinner. Dogs are welcome and a very impressive art collection greets the eyes. The proprietors are welcoming and friendly and we are soon tucked in - ordering wine and Sunday Roasts - roast pork, beef and lamb. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, the ambience, and the friendly folks of the village. This is our first visit to Wales and we are quickly learning to appreciate the very warm hospitality and friendly openness of the Welsh people.

After a leisurely exploration of the village, it is back to Maesywerngoch for a sundowner, games, the puzzle, and a late Caesar Salad. Then off to bed.

“Fantastic House”
Reviewed 1 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

This house and garden is all you could ever dream for in a property such as this. More space than you could ever use, and three days into your stay you will still be discovering new things about it! It is tastefully decorated, blending comfort and style to create this wonderful environment. It sits at a great vantage point in which to go walking all around the area, and when your there you feel you could be the only people in the world! The gardens were absolutely stunning, it was like having your own private park, although the midges and storm flies were an unfortunate downside. I could not even begin to stress how wonderful Maesywerngoch truly is, you must go there and see for yourself!

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Maesywerngoch. Yes, the midges can be a problem. We have put a 'Predator' machine to help combat them but at the end of the day we are in the forest!! I will put out more midge spray for our guests. We hope to welcome you again very soon.

“Fabulous Family Fun!”
Reviewed 22 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We stayed at Maesywerngoch for a long weekend in June 2015 to celebrate a 70th birthday. We were a family group of 12 (plus a dog), ranging in age from 7 to 70 and the house and gardens had something for all of us. After driving up the long driveway through the forest, we were so excited to arrive and discover this beautiful hidden gem. It literally seems to be in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by beautiful 360 degree views. The house has so much space for everyone, it is beautifully and comfortably furnished and very well equipped. The children loved relaxing in the lounge with the biggest corner sofa you have ever seen, watching tv and playing games. The adults loved socialising and cooking in the fabulous kitchen and we would all come together to eat in the lovely dining room which as well as a large table and chairs has a settee and two comfy armchairs. The bedrooms are all spacious with very comfortable beds and quality bedding. The garden is enormous with so many different paths to explore and a great lawn for playing rounders and volleyball - with equipment which we found in the house. We took a trip to Aberdovey and Barmouth but apart from that we spent all our time in the house and garden as we loved it so much. We would not hesitate to recommend Maesywerngoch and will definitely be back!
