“Hooray for Horsey Island”

We stayed here for one week with our three children (all under 5) and we had a fantastic time.

Vicki and her family made us feel very welcome and were great hosts with a personal and friendly touch.

The whole island is their farm and is crossed via a tidal causeway which adds to the adventure and uniqueness of this location. The island is beautiful and has a little bit of everything: beaches (sandy and pebbly), ponds and fields. Our children found the farm animals and wildlife both fascinating and exciting.

The cottage is spacious and comfortable with enough books, games and DVDs to keep our children occupied on the odd rainy day. The kitchen is well equipped and clean so we could cook a range of meals from chateaubriand to nachos! The bedrooms are good sizes and with warm bedding. There is a lovely outdoor space with a pond, lots of grass and beautiful views. Our children loved the regular visitors we would get; hares in the morning and peacocks during the day. Their best friend was a handsome pony called Floyd who lived next to the garden.

Out and about, we enjoyed the natural landscape and beauty of the island. Our SUV finally got the outing it deserved instead of the streets of London! Great fun!

On the mainland, there is good local produce with an excellent butchers, greengrocer and bakers in Frinton.

We give an enthusiastic two thumbs up to Island Cottage and Vicki and her family.

“Lovely cottage in a unique place, with wonderful hosts”

Island Cottage is lovely and simple with stylish touches by Vicky - who (along with her husband Joe) are the most wonderful and welcoming hosts. Joe has lived on the island all his life and is a true English gentleman farmer and Vicky (an Aussie) is warm, friendly and fun. The island has beaches, lakes, open fields and is very beautiful. The animals are fantastic mother hens with little chicks scuttling around the place, sweet lambs everywhere (in April), two cute pigs, runner ducks and geese - all around the cottage. Plus a huge amount of birds to spot. We were very comfortable and cosy in the cottage, with a very welcoming wood burning stove perfect after a morning helping to feed the sheep.

“Highly recommended - something very different and special”
Reviewed 1 January 2014 for a stay in December 2013

We stayed at Island Cottage for a few days between Christmas and New Year and had a fantastic time. The first impressions from approaching the island across the causeway are mostly of excitement and wonder - especially as the weather was good at the time and hundreds of interesting birds were feeding on the exposed mudflats in the afternoon sun. Because you are in your car, you can get a much closer view of the birds than if you tried to creep up on foot.
Vicky was very welcoming and helpful, and the cottage itself was a good base for our stay. The highlight was the island itself and the freedom to explore that is encouraged by Vicky and her family. When you first crest the sea defence to the north of the island, the beack and the 'breakwater' will take your breath away.
A very special wilderness experience with a comfortable cottage, tucked away in a quiet corner of Essex. Highly recommended for those keen on birds, photography, and just being outdoors.

“Beautiful cottage in special location”
Reviewed 1 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

I stayed here with my wife, sister and father over the last weekend in October. I have to say that the cottage was very well equipped, very comfortable and plenty big enough for the 4 of us. Wood was provided for the log burner, and right on our doorstep were nice walks.

The cottage is on a working farm, there are a lot of sheep, some horses, chickens and peacocks and a couple of pet pigs.

The location is very quiet. We wanted to "get away from it all" for a couple of days. It was a perfect location for that. Driving across the causeway was spectacular, with an opportunity to see some great birdlife close up on the way over.

I was a bit nervous about the "crossing" but in the end it was fine with a higher ground clearance car. I would have been very nervous with a normal car as the track across is understandably very uneven, I imagine though if taken slowly it is doable in most cars, but best check with the owner.

“A special island with special hosts”

Island cottage and horsey island is the most magical special place where you can do as much or as little as you like.
Firstly the causeway , this really isn't as daunting as people may think. There's a 4 hr window for getting on and off the island 2 hrs before and 2 hrs after low tide. The drive across is an opportunity to see natural habitat for many different types of birds. My 82 yr old dad drove across with no worries at all.
Island cottage is spotlessly clean, well equipped with everything you could need and is cosy, full of character and has a lovely garden area with a picnic table and lovely views over the farmland and little lake in front of it . The 3 bedrooms are very spacious with comfy beds . The bathroom has a bath as well as a separate powerful shower.
The kitchen is well equipped with cutlery, pans double oven and fridge freezer, the dining room has a lovely large dining table and the lounge comfy sofas and a lovely log burner.
The island is just a peaceful haven with lots of animals including sheep, peacocks, ducks, horses and 2 of the cutest friendliest pigs this is a working farm but apart from the farmyard at the back of the cottage the rest of the island is free to roam about, plenty of fields to wander through and experience nature, a private beach with golden sand to swim from and just escape from the real world. Due to the remoteness there is no light pollution so the sky at night is just full of bright stars and amazing to see.
What makes the island even more special are Vicky, Joe, Olly and Noah Backhouse, they are the friendliest and kindest people who will go,out of their way to ensure everyone is welcome and made to feel special. Nothing is too much trouble for them . 3 other special backhouses are scoobie and Lucy the border collies and pixie the spaniel these dogs are seriously cute and very friendly.
Island cottage and horsey island is a very special magical place where adults can relax and kids can be kids in a safe environment and just have fun.
We all had a fab stay and I'm going to sneak back and become a squatter in the cottage :)
