“Excellent base to discover Durham County's places of interest.”

Clean and new, this cottage suited us just fine. Delightful personal attention and contact from the owners. It was our first break in Durham and it was an excellent base, a pleasure to get back to. Don't miss a trip to Auckland Castle to see both what is there but also to see what they are planning to do - it's very ambitious.

“Beautiful Cottage, Wonderful Host”
Reviewed 25 April 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Our stay at Bracken Hill Farm Cottage couldn't have been better! Highly recommended and we'll definitely be coming back.

Us: 2 couples + 1 dog, 3 night stay over new years.

The Host:

Angela is the most warm and helpful host anyone could ask for and really went out of her way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.

We were arriving on NYE and didn't think of making any dinner reservations until last minute. Of course, everywhere we called was fully booked but Angela helped us find a dog-friendly pub which luckily had a cancellation and saved us from having to order a takeout as our new years dinner.

We didn't rent a car (again, poor planning on our side) but Angela gave us several lifts to/from Bishop Auckland and managed to find us a taxi driver who was working on NYE.

The Cottage:

The cottage was beautiful, cosy and everything was at highest standard.
Underfloor heating throughout the cottage, fireplace, comfortable beds, brilliant showers, good wifi connection, torches, anything you could think of!

Very comfortable living space, perfect for 2 couples.

Peaceful and quiet location with pubs and shops nearby. A lovely walk along the old railway to Bishop Auckland for a nice day out.

Truly Dog Friendly:

For anyone who likes bringing their dogs on holidays, we can all tell when the fluffy one is comfortable with a place and Bracken Hill Farm Cottage nailed it! My dog loved it there and because he was happy, we were able to really relax and enjoy our holiday.

Upon arrival and after a quick sniff around the cottage, he quickly jumped onto the nice fluffy bed Angela laid out for him and snuggled up just like that. He loved spending his days lying down in front of the glass doors in the living room watching the fields outside. Angela's sheep were moved to the next field down so my dog had an entire fenced up field all to himself! For a London dog, that really was quite something.

Angela provided dog treats, towels, bowls and there were even dog tags with the cottage address/phone number in case he got lost during our holiday. Every little detail made us feel truly welcome.

“A Hidden Luxurious Gem ”

After a busy Christmas we had a little retreat to Bracken Hill Farm Cottage and it was the perfect setting .... relaxation and sheer luxury.
If I had to describe it in a few words it is Ultimate Luxury..
The owners have worked so hard and paid great attention to detail to ensure our stay was perfect.
The cottage itself is immaculate and very well cared for, it was clean (to the highest standard) and kitchen was more than well equipped. The underfloor heating and separate temperature control for each room was great.
I loved the mood lighting in the bathrooms and the waterfall walk in shower was my highlight!
It's also very easy to find and great location 15 mins to Durham and uou have Weardale on your doorstep (if the weather had been nicer it would have been great to go for a long walk)
It's a fantastic cottage and can honestly say we will be returning

“Australian visitors recommend Bracken Hill Farm Cottage”

The cottage was modern but with character and charm. We stayed in December and found it warm and cosy with great bathrooms and really comfortable beds. The kitchen was well equipped which was great for us during our 2 week stay. I was able to cook hearty dinners for family who live in the village nearby. The location is quiet and situated in the heart of the countryside but also just outside the village and local towns. There is so much to see and do in the North East of England with plenty of country walks to enjoy. The owner was welcoming and very helpful. We are Australians, now planning another visit during the summer months as we thoroughly enjoyed staying here.

“Luxurious”

Enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing weekend stay with my husband, our daughter and her fiance and our two border collies. The cottage is immaculate and has everything you need to cook or just relax. Ang the owner was so welcoming and her introduction to the cottage and the welcome pack including dog treats was outstanding.
The walk in power shower was great and spotless. The huge bed and top quality bedding enabled the best sleep we have had in months.
Our border collie loved watching the sheep from the patio doors. Some dog friendly cottage owners merely tolerate dogs but Ang is clearly a dog lover.
We were there for a birthday weekend to meet up and the weather was awful but didnt spoil our stay at all.
The nearby Quarry Burn is a great place for a meal especially Sunday lunch.
Cant recommend this place highly enough. Thanks Ang.
