Owner description: A Palace fit for Kings, built for Prince Bishops Auckland Castle Trust is transforming this 900 year old Bishop’s Palace from an unknown and almost unvisited private dwelling into a vibrant and fascinating visitor experience. Auckland Castle stands apart as the medieval home and hunting lodge of the Prince Bishops of Durham who for centuries were equal in power to the Kings of England. Please note, Auckland Castle is now closed to daily visits for major restoration and redevelopment work until 2018. However we still have many events running throughout the year

We were in the area and popped in last August. the castle was shut for extensive renovation and as far as the security was concerned there were no tours of any kind.
Walked through the park down to the Deer House which was impressive considering its function.
The paths were showing the impact of numerous HGVs despite the metal tracking in some areas.

The castle is currently under construction, expanding sections, unearthing archaeological digs. It looks a little bit of a mess at present but the finished outcome later this year/early next year will give the castle a whole new dimension.

A local to the town I've watched the transformation over the last year or so. The transformation of the market place from the Mining Gallery and now the new castle Welcome centre with its viewing tower have brought mixed opinions but add these to the transformation of the castle, soon it will hopefully be a significant tourist attraction to an area enriched with history.

Even though the castle is officially currently closed to the public they are giving guided behind the scenes tours to show the public what is going on behind closed doors and an insight into future developments such as the walled garden next door.

Even with all this development it doesn't stop you venturing further into the deer park for stunning views of the castle, Kynren and the wear valley.

The castle is right in town undergoing major renovation/restoration. We were fortunate enough to be in town for a tour of the castle as it is under construction. The 3 volunteer guides who handled our group were well informed and ever so enthusiastic about the castle project. Over our week in town we walked the grounds several times and are inclined to return when the castle and many other town projects are completed in Dec 2018.

I have come here several times over the last 7 years and have never found the Castle open however you can have a good walk around the extensive and beautiful ancient estate. The highlight for me is the 18th century deer pen.
