“The best cream tea”

Nelly May's Parlour
Ranked #1 of 124 Restaurants in Ilfracombe
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$ 4 - US$ 16
Description: Nelly May's Parlour, conveniently situated on The High Street, is a traditional tearoom oozing with olde worlde character and charm - part of the tearoom dates from Tudor times so why not take a break and soak up the atmosphere. A perfect choice for an exquisitely scrumptious breakfast, lunch, coffee, cream or afternoon tea or homemade cake. We use organic flour to make our Artisan bread which is made daily on the premises, all homemade cakes and scones are made with organic flour and free range eggs and our jams and marmalades are also homemade. We try to source our produce locally and use fresh quality ingredients where possible. Nelly May's is licensed and is a perfect venue for Birthdays, Christenings or other special occasions. We can provide afternoon teas but as our bread, cakes and scones are freshly baked booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.

We stopped in for lunch--I had wonderful homemade soup, and, my husband said his eggs were the best he'd ever had. And the restaurant itself was charming, so we came back the next day for our first-ever cream tea. It was sublime: the scones were so delicious and almost melted in your mouth. The clotted cream was divine. The preserves were homemade and even better than the ones I make! And each pot of tea came with a lovely handmade cosy. The owner was lovely and told of us interesting places to see that we'd missed during our visit. Highly recommended.

We were in Ilfracombe for one night only and in the morning went in search of breakfast. We asked at one restaurant on the Harbour if they did breakfast, they didn't and recommended Wetherspoons. We obviously passed on this recommendation!

Eventually we found Nelly May's Parlour which was just opening. I had the Full English breakfast which uses locally-sourced, quality ingredients. My GF had Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Egg on toast. Both meals were delicious.

Why anyone would want to go to Wetherspoons instead of this great destination should have their head read - OK you might be able to pile loads and loads on your plate at 'Spoons - but then some people are more interested in quality than quantity and supporting a local business.

The owner is incredible too and really friendly and chatty. It's nice to go somewhere so welcoming instead of some restaurants where you feel like you're doing them a favour being in there.

If we're in town from Cheltenham again we'll certainly be going to Nelly May's again for breakfast.

A little bit of ENGLAND IN A CUP of tea. The couple who own and run this establishment work hard at makeing the experience a quiet delivery of a good cuppa and toast. The food is excellent and always busy. All the cooking done on sight by the couple husband and wife team. The wife is beaming with enthusiasm she loves her bit of England, personal service and agrees on the concept that service with a smile helps you on a rainy day. And in the little time Ive been here there is a lot of rainy days. the food is as one would expect Very British very good

You could easily walk past this place, but thanks to Tripadvisor we found it.
Very quaint with low ceilings and a feeling that perhaps more eating establishments had this feel once, when more people used to really care about their ingredients and who ate them.
The owners don't just say they source with integrity, but even go to the point of stating their sources proudly at the front of the menu.
It's clear this couple have put a lot of effort into Nelly Mays and they deserve to be successful, they should be an example for more restaurants.

Dropped in to Nelly May's parlour for afternoon tea just 15 minutes before they were due to close. We were genuinely welcomed in and we ordered cream teas for 2 and lemon drizzle cake. The scones, clotted cream and jam were presented on a pretty cake stand and all our tea-pots had their own hand-knitted tea-cosies. Both the lemon drizzle cake and the cream teas were probably the best we have had (and we have tried a lot)!

Our waitress / host was very welcoming, friendly and caring, despite us staying there until almost 30 minutes after closing time.

The parlour was spotlessly clean, and immaculately presented, including the restroom.

We also purchased some of Nelly May's own marmalade, and received a loyalty card for any future visits.
