My Mum and I stayed in this welcoming and tranquil place recently while we attended the also excellent Beer, Buses and Walks event on the beautiful Isle of Wight.
On arrival we experienced a friendly welcome from Anne and Bob and were invited to have a hot drink in the delightful lounge area overlooking the stunning award-winning garden with its palm trees etc and overlooking a wide aspect of Shanklin Bay. We also enjoyed this lounge on other occasions during our stay as a place to truly relax and hear no noise from the outside world !
Our rooms were extremely comfortable (most importantly the beds of course), apparently recently decorated and spotlessly clean and the sea was visible from our respective windows down each side of the Carlton.
Breakfast was served by Anne in a traditional style breakfast room, which we felt was a pleasant and intimate way of doing things - so much nicer than the impersonal, buffet type affairs which many hotels & guest houses use these days. Needless to say the breakfast was warm, tasty and ample and Anne took her time to speak with us daily in a friendly manner but without being intrusive.
To conclude we would recommend the Carlton Hotel and found it very befitting of the way things tend to still be done on the Isle of Wight - with charm, warmth and in an easy-going way.

Room Tip: All areas of Hotel were peaceful, sea facing rooms have full sea view, side rooms have partial sea view.

The Carlton Hotel in Shanklin is situated in an ideal position on the cliff overlooking the sea. The owners are very kind and helpful and breakfast is great. The only downside for some might be that they don't do evening meals, but there are plenty of eating places in the town. A small, friendly hotel and well worth a visit.

Regretted booking it the moment we walked in. Disappointing, in spite of message painted on the wall, we did not find it welcoming at all. The sea views are good if the pay over £20 a night extra, but if not, the other rooms have views overlooking walls of other hotels on either side. There is a nice lounge overlooking gardens but that is only for guests for their tea rooms to eat in. B and B guests eat in a drab back room with no view adjacent to kitchen . Food was average to poor. Room was rather a step back in time, but not in a good way. Slept well as bed was comfy, tiny tv but we didn't watch any so didn't matter to us. Very well stocked tea coffee and hot chocolate in the room and biscuits replenished daily, great for taking flask of tea out in ruck sack for beach fossilling. As we left , I Called in at the big white hotel next door with indoor pool and found half board there was less than we paid for just B and B and very welcoming staff. We would not consider ever coming to the Carlton again. We drove past it and missed it initially as it is really a B ans B jammed in between two big hotels either side. To call it a hotel , with so few facilities is misleading. Clearly the tea rooms is their main concern . Garden is very nice, shame they do not serve breakfast overlooking this.

My wife ,daughters and our grandchildren loved what is now regarded as our annual trip to Shanklin and our stay at the Carlton Hotel. We are warmly welcomed and always have a brilliant time.Anne and Robert ensure that we have an amazing stay going out of their way to make us feel at home.
For us Shanklin is a perfect location-plenty to occupy the grandchildren,an excellent beach, superb sea views from the Carltons award winning gardens and a good selection of restaurants to dine at in the evenings.
The breakfasts were great as were the lunches served on the decked area.
We all have some great memories of our visit.
Well done Anne and Robert -hope to visit you again early next year.
