“2 Cathedrals”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2012

Spot on this hotel, right in the city centre, close to restaurants, cathedral, shops and theatre.
Car parking good but watch your sat nav setting, finding the hotel and car park takes a bit of doing.Suggest you call the hotel for directions.

Room Tip: ask for a room facing the fitness center, less noisy than others, but others are ok

The hotel makes note of the fact that there can be noise from the adjacent bars - and indeed there is. Yes, there is insulation, but I cannot imagine really how the noise could be completely kept out. We stayed 4 nights - the Thursday night was quiet, but the other three were not. However we had brought earplugs with us (having read the hotel's notice) and it was really quite comfortable to sleep. We were in 302 - directly looking over the bars.

Without a doubt the most amazing thing for us about the hotel was the breakfast! We hadn't prebooked breakfast and it was easy to pay for this at the breakfast reception area. It couldn't be charged to the room, but that wasn't any problem. I'm glad we hadn't prebooked breakfast actually as after the first two days of the full breakfast, we had to have a rest on day three and have nothing at all! On day four we had the continental - including porridge cooked on order. I really can't speak highly enough about the breakfast.

The room was quite small really (although very adequate) - although perhaps because it had a lovely king sized bed the room seemed smaller. Everything was very comfortable.

Very pleased to have stayed there. All staff were extremely pleasant.

There are quite a lot of stairs to negotiate from the railway station to the hotel so be prepared for that (or take a cab perhaps). I hadn't realised Durham was quite so hilly - my lack of research.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the bars are quite noisy.

Stayed one night for bed and breakfast - short trip to see my son at the University. Really nice, clean, spacious modern room and the hotel had very good facilities, and all much better than I expected. The staff were great -really polite, helpful and friendly... Also the location is great - very central to get to everything you want to see in Durham. Overall great experience and will definitely stay there again.

Booked 3 rooms for 2 nights on the day of arrival but still a good price.

Great location, close to the cathedral, 10 min walk from the train station, some restaurants (chiquitos, Slug & Lettuce etc) very close by but walk 2 minutes into the Market Place & you will find nice local owned restaurants & chip shops.

Comfy rooms, exactly what you expect from a Premier Inn, Staff were very nice & well presented.

Got a bit lost trying to find the main entrance. From Claypath turn onto providence Row, take the first left onto Freeman's PI. There is a large car park on this road, reasonable prices. I think the parking is free 6pm - 8pm.

'Whittard of chelsea' store in the Market place had a large range of teas & gifts.

Room Tip: 305 (3rd floor) overlooks the main entrance road and carpark, some noise from pedestrians but it did...

This hotel provided fairly standard budget accommodation, but the staff are exceptionally friendly making a stay very enjoyable. It is well situated for visiting the cathedral and other sights in Durham.
I thought it was a little overpriced. All over the hotel are signs saying you can book a room at Premier Inns for £29. This is not very comforting when, like me,you have already paid more than double this. A glance at the internet shows that the Durham City Centre Premier Inn does not appear to have any £29 rooms any time this year, so I think the signs may be misleading.
There is a good swimming pool/leisure centre next to the hotel run by the Council (not part of the hotel)
Having read previous reviews I asked for a quiet room and was given one at the side of the hotel which was very peaceful.
