“A happy return”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2010

We visited the Old England on the 25/6/7 January. We had been visitors some years previously and were very pleased with the standards now been set.
We booked an executive double and upon arrival we were upgraded. The room was large clean and well fitted and had a lake view. The colour scheme was muted brown and gold and did not in our opinion enhance the rooms quality.
The bathroom was excellent and all the fittings modern and well maintained.
The room was well serviced throughout our stay.
The public rooms particularly the lounge was well decorated and offered excellent views of the lake.
The dining room was of a similar high standard. Dinner was haute cuisine (very good] with an option of steaks at a surcharge. The cheese board offered an excellent raange of English cheeses.
The continental breakfast was very good and we were never tempted by a cooked breakfast which carried a surcharge.
The reception and concierge service always provided service with a smile
The car parking was good [important in Windermere] though not adjacent to the hotel. A valet parking service was offered and I would suggest taking it up at least for the first visit as the car park though is only two hundred yards away when walking, pedestrianization calls for a short drive with two not obvious turns.
The staff were always helpful and always had a smile.
We shall be returning in the near future for another stay.

Fatastic loaction (lake views and Bowness pubs and restaurants on your doorstep) but lack of attention to detail took the edge off an otherwise excellent 2 night break. We wanted a hotel with a nice lounge - this one has one of the best. Unfortunately attention to detail was amiss. We waited over 20 mins to order drinks in the lounge (a family had just ordered teas/coffees and chocolates and this seemed to cause a disproportionate delay) and I finally ordered a glass of Australian Shiraz. What arrived was a South African Pinotage. I went back to the bar and asked what I'd been served, "I'm not sure" was the answer "he probably just picked up any bottle..." recommendation no'1 - know your wines!
It was my husbands birthday while we were staying and I asked for an ice bucket and 2 champagne glasses to be delivered to the room. These arrived immediately, presented on a silver tray - witha splodge of dried ketchup on the edge... recommendation no'2 ...well obvious really!
I gave this feedback on departure - this could really be a great hotel if a bit more care and attention is paid by staff.

I stayed here last weekend with a group of 9 family members, ranging from 8 yr old to 72 yrs old. I found the hotel and its amenities to be of a very high quality, just as I expected. The staff simply couldn't do enough to assist, which made our visit extra special as we were celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary for my parents in law.
Our room overlooked the rear of the hotel and faced the rear of other nearby pubs, yes there was noise but not excessive. Our room was in the newest part of the hotel and benefitted from the most modern room & bathroom, which was spotlessly clean.
The meals proved to be outstanding, nothing at all dissapointed us, we took the continental breakfast which was fine for me, but others in our group took the english option. The bar prices were high, £6 for Magners, or G & T, £4.50 per pint and £30 for house red wine.
The last thing is the off site car park is to the LEFT of the hotel, not the right as I was originally directed and travelled a mile or two !
The leisure facilities are a great asset to the hotel, children allowed in between 12 -2 and 4- 6 over the weekend. My wife used the spa and again, states that this is also very high quality.
All in all I would love to re-visit the hotel and recommend it to anyone.

I was just recommending this hotel to a friend and I thought I must add a review for it.

Its a wonderful hotel, the furnishings and atmosphere is fantastic. The food very good and the staff pleasant and helpful. We even had our little dog in the room with us, which was great.

Only two slight considerations. The car park is a walk away down the street, as parking is at a real premium in this little town BUT it is secure. The only other disappointment was that the huge windows in the dining room which gives a unbelievable view of Lake Windermere were dirty. A great pity as the view is incredible.

We booked a two day break in the Macdonald Leeming House Hotel on Ullswater but were informed as we went to check in that the hotel was closed due to a gas leak. The manager assured us he had tried to contact us but we had heard nothing. After a 150 mile drive this wasnt the news we were looking to receive. We were informed that we had been booked into the Old England at Windermere instead (20 miles away) and that all our upgrades would be delivered there. Unfortunately the pass between Ullswater and Windermere was closed so the 20 mile journey became a 40 mile journey via Keswick !!!! We arrived over an hour and half later at The Old England and were greeted by name, our bags immediately collected and delivered to an upgraded executive room (good touch of PR to a pair of somewhat disgruntled guests.) The room was superb, spacious and had fantastic views overlooking the lake. A bottle of Champagne was in the room and a box of chocolates. We were starting to feel that maybe we had had a stroke of good luck with being moved from the isolated Leeming House to The Old England in picturesque Bowness. The 'village' is interesting and well kept (manly geared at rambler types but with so many good pubs and restaurants that there was something for everybody including a Beatrix Potter museum).
We had a dinner as part of our package and the food was top notch and well presented, if a bit pricey but for quality who cares,an delivered in a (very) leisurely manner by polite if somewhat 'bemused at times' staff. Be prepared to wait a little between courses but the wait is worth it. Every course was excellent .....excellent chef.
The next day the hotel gave us a complimentary pair of tickets on the ferry boat trip to Ambleside. We were told it was a ten minute stroll from the jetty to Ambleside. Well it may be for fit ramblers but at about 1.5 miles it took us a little longer although it is an easy walk. Ambleside is worth visiting if a little 'touristy' and has lots of good coffee shops and small different clothes and art shops.
On arriving back at the hotel in the afternoon we were given a complimentary cream tea voucher to compensate for our disturbance. The hotel staff really could not have been more helpful and were eternally cheerful.
On our second evening we ate out at Jacksons Bistro (five minutes from the hotel) and the food was again absolutely excellent. There are so many good looking restaurants that you have a bewildering choice (at this time of year anyway). For a final drink we tried the Hole Int Wall pub which was very good with a roaring fire and hand pumped real ale.
We didnt sample the swimming pool or spa (we had not expected one so were no geared up for it) but the guests we spoke to who had used them were delighted with the facilities.
All in all we had a wonderful time and would recommend the hotel. I read in an earlier report that one guest was disappointed with the Customer Service. Well the hotel have certainly taken notice as our service could not have been better.
