The cottage is in the perfect spot, in a little village just near the Dorset coast. Lovely spacious cottage with a great pub nearby.
Definitely worth a stay!
Laurel Cottage is a lovely 4 bedroomed cottage in the heart of the beautiful village of Sutton Poyntz, about a 10 minute drive from Weymouth. We booked the cottage for a family weeks holiday for myself, my husband, son, daughter, son-in-law, 2 young grandsons & my sister & brother-in-law. From the very beginning, Andrew the owner was prompt when replying to my emails, & very helpful with any questions I had.
The cottage has been thoughtfully done out to a very high standard, & we all fell in love with it as soon as we walked through the door.
There is a huge hallway, with boxes & boxes of children's toys, which my grandsons soon made use of. In the understairs cupboard there are 2 stair gates,a childs carrier back pack & a single buggy to use. There is a folder with relevant information & tips on where to eat, places to visit etc.
The lounge is through double doors, with 2 sofa's, a gorgeous fireplace & tv, with scores of DVD's on the shelf, & numerous games in the cupboard under the TV.
The dining room is another large room, again with a flat screen TV, a small wooden child's table & 4 chairs & a lovely oak table that seats 8 comfortably, with double doors through to the kitchen.
The kitchen is amazing, loads of storage cupboards, a central island with wine fridge, bar stools etc. There was plenty of crockery & cutlery, but glasses were a bit thin on the ground, & we kept having to wash them up. There is an amazing American style fridge/freezer, with it's own ice making machine, which we all loved, & now want one at home!
The kitchen is so well equipt that there was nothing we needed that wasn't already there. They provide a couple of tea towels, dish cloth, 2 dishwasher tablets etc to be going on with, but as I had brought all that stuff with me, it was fine.
The four bedrooms are all a reasonable size, with lovely cotton bedding, & comfortable beds, & a child's travel cot & bed guard are in the wardrobe. There is plenty of storage space with wardrobes & chest of drawers in all rooms. We had the room with the ensuite, which has a great shower, & the family bathroom is next door to this room, again a great functional bathroom. Bath towels are provided, but they are very small, so we got my son to bring our own bath sheets from home, down with him on the Sunday.
The front garden is very pretty, but somewhat overgrown, the back garden is also overgrown, but a lovely pleasant area to sit out in. There is a small round cast iron table & four chairs, plus cane effect seats & sofa's & 2 tables up in the gravelled BBQ area at the top of the garden. The gas BBQ is great, but was unfortunately very dirty when we opened it on the Monday evening, so DH spent 20 minutes cleaning it. (The owner has told me, he will speak to the cleaners about this, so hopefully it won't happen again)
On the Sunday there was a Victorian Fayre in the village, & the whole village was shut off. We duly moved all our cars to the field car park, & walked along the path beside the cottage into the most beautiful village I have ever seen, it was like something out of a film set, with stalls, bunting, vintage cars, pimms & strawberries tent etc etc. We had an amazing afternoon & would recommend it to anyone, but it only takes place every 2 years, so you will have to wait until 2020 now for the next one!!
There are 2 or 3 pubs within walking distance, & we had a meal at the Spice Ship at Preston, which was lovely, we also sampled the fish & chips at Preston Chippy, again very good.
We loved Weymouth beach & seafront, spent a day at Lynmouth & Durdle dor, visited a couple of markets, went to Dorchester shopping, & visited Portland, where we had a wonderful lunch at Billy Winters cafe, on the causeway as you drive up to Portland. Great food & cocktails, & a lovely pebble beach with calm sea, ideal for small children, & adults learning to paddle board!
We had the most wonderful week, & of course the weather was gorgeous too, it was like being abroard, waking up to blue skies & sunshine every day. I will be recommending this cottage to family & friends, & we hope to return in the future.
Laurel Cottage is a very tastefully renovated thatched cottage. The cottage is large and roomy, very clean with hotel standard towels and linens. The fixtures and fittings are done to a very high standard indeed and, on the whole, we enjoyed our stay.
We are a large family of seven adults plus two dogs and therefore we put all the facilities to the 'test' somewhat. We were really impressed with the kitchen as we like to cook; even on holiday!
If there are any points of criticism to be made about Laurel Cottage they are easily remedied. There is only just enough cutlery, glasses and crockery for 8 people at a time, which for us meant a lot of washing up and use of the dishwasher.
Some of the beds have very firm mattresses which could be greatly improved by the addition of mattress toppers.
We did, however, have a few unexpected issues with Laurel Cottage when we first arrived, which we were assured were unusual. Unfortunately the cleaning company had not been informed of our arrival which meant that the house had not been cleaned or the bedding/towels changed from the previous visitors. After a swift phone call to the owner, a lovely lady appeared and worked for 3 hours to clean the bathrooms/toilets, leave fresh towels and change the beds.
We cleaned the kitchen ourselves in order to be able to put away the supermarket online food order that we had organised! It was arranged that another cleaner would come along the following morning for a further two hours to vacuum, mop and dust the rooms.
Another problem - which proved the most challenging - was that the garden is certainly NOT secure for dogs! Even the smallest canine could easily escape, if so minded, from the garden. After some discussion with the owner, it was agreed that we would buy and fit some chicken wire to temporarily secure the back garden for our dogs. Thankfully this worked well although we dismantled it when we left.
We are hoping that the owner will be addressing this issue and secure the back garden for people bringing there dogs. In our opinion, Laurel Cottage would then be a perfect Dorset holiday experience!
Sutton Pontyz is a charming village. The house is situated on the corner of a road and a pedestrian walk which leads up to the duck pond and good local gastro pub. My wife and I used the opportunity to do several walks including one to Lulworth Cove along the coastal path - highly recommended! Overall - a wonderful period cottage with plenty of space, excellently located and finished internally to a high standard. Would recommend.
