“Good food in very pleasant surroundings but not as good as it thinks it is”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2012

Like other reviewers I was expecting amazing things after reading the very favourable press The Pig has been getting recently. All of the elements of an excellent restaurant are there: the location just outside Brockenhurst is perfect; the hotel/restaurant is really nicely decorated; the welcome was warm and the service good even though the restaurant was packed. We did have a very nice meal overall but it just didn't quite live up to the rave reviews. The selection of wines was impressive, lots by the glass, and whilst the food was good overall, there was just something lacking which it needs to take it from pleasant to the excellent I had been expecting. The piggy bits to start were nice enough, the cottage pie was well cooked but nothing out of the ordinary, the icecream desserts again were good but not amazing. The stand out was the Dorset crab and chips, the crab was massive, a meal in itself with the choice of having it hot or cold, and it was really tasty with loads of meat although the chips were a little soggy. At the end of the meal, we were left to fend for ourselves and had to wander around trying to find our coats. I would definitely return and with a few minor tweaks the Pig really could be excellent.

For months I have been studying The Pig's website, including all the impressive newspaper and magazine reviews. If all the rave reviews are true then The Pig must be a superb place to go I concluded. So, expectations sky high I booked a place for lunch as a special treat for a friend and myself.
The morning of the lunch reservation I was called up to be informed that there were going to be some road works carried out on the driveway leading up to The Pig. It was a very nice touch and I was very pleased to be contacted about this. So, my friend and I drove up to The Pig, the sun was shining and it was a lovely day. The outside looked very impressive and lovely. As we entered the bar we fell in love with the decor and shabby chic of the restaurant. Since we were a few minutes early we decided to have a drink at the bar. However, no one came to ask what we would like despite there being at least 3 or 4 staff in the room, busying themselves with everything else but looking after the guests. My friend finally asked someone behind the bar if we could order a drink and we were then served. After sitting in the bar for a while, I noticed that it was passed our actual reservation time but no one had bothered to ask us if we wanted to move over to the restaurant or have another drink. We were just left sitting in the bar. Once again we decided to approach someone and asked if we could move to our table and order lunch. We were then seated at our table and chose our lunch. The lunch was served promptly and the food tasted nice but not spectacular. No one came to pour us any more wine or water or simply to ask if everything was o.k. When our plates were cleared we were finally asked if the food was good. After asking for the bill we were presented with it faster than lightning and before I even had a chance to check it someone already came with the credit card machine. Hence I never noticed that a fat service charge of 12.5 % was whacked on the bill for a service non-existent!
This place seems overrated for the kind of money you pay and what you actually get for it.

I decided to visit the Pig restaurant with some friends as I had heard such great reviews about the place - and i can honestly say it did not disappoint me! The atmosphere is absolutely lovely, the food was delicious and above all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
When we arrived it was pretty busy, so I immediately worried that we would not have as good a time as I had hoped. I have been to some places which are lovely, until it gets busy and then the standard of service tends to drop - but I am happy to say I was proved wrong in this case! We were seated straight away, and our food came not long after our order was taken. The female restaurant manager who was looking after us could not have been more polite, more friendly or more helpful.
When the food arrived it was absolutely delicious and not one of us could find fault with it at all. The location is beautiful, the food is great, the price is reasonable and the staff are of the friendliest around - what more can you ask for!?!
I would highly recommend this restaurant and I will most definitely visit again.

We visited The Pig for an anniversary Sunday lunch. The location is beautiful, even when visiting in the rain the whole place felt snug, warm & welcoming. All the staff we meet were lovely, attentive & came across as genuinely caring. We had drinks in the library before dining and were then escorted through to the conservatory to eat. The decor throughout the hotel and restaurant was lovely and as if you were staying in a lovely old cottage, with food and drinks being served in unusual, but quaint containers, like the potato chips served in terracotta flower pots.
Would recommend this restaurant to everyone. It is really nice to see seasonal, local and home grown products being cooked and presented in such delightful ways. In other reviews people mention the food having little flavour - but everyone's taste are completely different. We found all we ate absolutely lovely. We will definitely go back soon.

we just had our 2nd lunch with colleagues at The Pig this year. an absolute adorable place, amazing location in the middle of the pristine New Forest in southern england. just beautiful.
we were 7 persons. we had some drinks at the bar beforehand and afterwards had lunch in the main restaurant. the food was good except the meat (rib eye steak) had no flavour at all, and i mean nothing. entrees and desserts were amazing, really nice taste.
the only issue is the attitude problem of the lady manager of the restaurant. she is just totally unfriendly and not helpful. the french waiters are lovely and do their best but they are swimming in rough waters and do not really have someone professional helping them and coaching them.
a sad thing because we absolutely love The Pig in The New Forest.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pig is a bang up to date take on a new style of home grown, 26 bedroom country house hotel and what that needs to be today - original, relaxed and sitting comfortably within its environment. It's really a restaurant with rooms. This is a place that is all about the walled garden and everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef - they grow and find the food - the chef then makes the menu. The style is home grown in every way - breaking the mold of designed hotels, daring to be comfortable in its own skin, working with what it has and recognising what is good about that. It won't be perfect, it will be warm, relaxed, comfy, interesting, and homely with muted colours, a bit shabby chic and evolved rather than interior designed. ... more   less
