“Dream Location & Terrible Service”
Reviewed 28 April 2012

we just had our 2nd lunch with colleagues at The Pig this year. an absolute adorable place, amazing location in the middle of the pristine New Forest in southern england. just beautiful.
we were 7 persons. we had some drinks at the bar beforehand and afterwards had lunch in the main restaurant. the food was good except the meat (rib eye steak) had no flavour at all, and i mean nothing. entrees and desserts were amazing, really nice taste.
the only issue is the attitude problem of the lady manager of the restaurant. she is just totally unfriendly and not helpful. the french waiters are lovely and do their best but they are swimming in rough waters and do not really have someone professional helping them and coaching them.
a sad thing because we absolutely love The Pig in The New Forest.

We stayed for a Sunday-Monday night April 22-23. It was rainy and cold and by the time we got to the hotel we were tired, wet and in need of a rest.

Our room was not ready but we arrived at 2:30pm and check in isn't until 3:30pm. We were assured by the staff that our room would be given priority and cleaned immediately. We went to the bar and had one lovely cocktail and then were told that our room was ready. I was a bit apprehensive thinking it would have been just given a quick wipe but it was fantastically clean, lovely and nice when we arrived.

We stayed in the Main house in Room 7. It was a large room with a separate bath and shower. The floors were fine and are not rough. We had an amazing bed and TV and a Nespresso machine which we enjoyed every morning.

The room was above the dining area, and my only concern is that you could hear the music from the dining room until about 11pm at night and then early in the morning as it came through the floors. The jangling/table moving of the dining room came through as well. It wasn't super loud, though, and we live in Chicago, so we're used to some noise. It wasn't even enough noise to keep us awake. But if you're looking for total peace and quiet this may not be your room.

We dined on Monday night and, although the food was good, it really wasn't anything special. There were, as previously mentioned, many servers. There seemed to be a wine steward and then a waiter and an assistant waiter. The 'Piggy Bits" we ordered at the beginning was incredibly small: Four olives and some prociutto. Not really worth the cost. The starter I had was supposed to be a nice, soft, egg and some aparagus. My egg, however, arrived hard and that was disappointing. We had steaks and chips and that was good enough, but nothing to write home enough. Desserts were amazing, though, and we really enjoyed the chocolate pot and the honeycomb. Dinner came to 119GBP which was just too high for the quality. The pacing of the meal, too, was very rushed. But service was great and our waiter was terrific.

We went to the lounge areas after dinner and played scrabble and enjoyed a roaring fire and then went back up to the room.

We didn't drive to Brokenhurst and if you don't, getting from the Pig to the town will require a taxi ride every time you want to do something. Which is a bit of a pain. It would be nice if the hotel could have bikes or a shuttle service so you don't have to pay money each time you do something.

The only other complaint is that breakfast is not included in the cost of the room. The Pig isn't cheap. It is definately a treat. It would be a better deal if you could have a breakfast as lesser places offer this. It really detracts from the value of the stay.

All in all we'd love to go back. The staff/service was lovely. The building is amazing and not shabby at all. The rooms clean as a pin and the beds amazingly comfortable. It's not trendy, annoying, loud, dirty or full of itself.

The dining isn't the greatest, but considering what's available in town, it may be the best option.

Food- really bad. And I mean bad. Crab was poolry shelled and so cold it was frozen in the middle. The less said about the pork belly, the better. Not crispy, not crackly. Clearly not "slow cooked". Felt and tasted like it had been boiled. Boiled skin is not very nice.

Service- really bad. The waitress brought out my main when I was still eating my starter and had to be asked to return it to the kitchen!

Ambience/atmosphere. The bar area is cool but interior design budget obviosuly ran out after that. The sitting room particular feels weird.

A shame as the building is nice, as is the setting. But thats about it.

When it was called Whiteley Ridge under the previous ownership you were made to feel special. You came away feeling totally satisfied. Always a superb menu, superb service and extemely luxurious furnishings. In two words 'warm' and 'welcoming'.
NOW - The Pig as its aptly called, offers bare floor boards and extremely 'shabby' sheak furnishings. We were served by a young man wearing jeans and bumper boots and the dining table and chair was just like the ones in my potting shed. We didnt expect a farmyard type experience, especially in view of the prices.
We ate at Whiteley Ridge many times and always enjoyed the whole experience, we are totally devasted and will have to find somewhere else to celebrate our birthdays and anniversaries.

I was taken to the Pig as a birthday treat. It was FAB. Shabby Chic at its best. There’s probably a newer word for it now but I’m sure you know what I mean.
Stayed in the delightful converted stables with splintery floorboards.
Lovely staff.Food and décor to die for.
Only gripe is being asked to pay £30 extra for breakfast for 2. The place is expensive enough. It happened to me once before at Crillon le Brave in France. A bit naughty.
I’m still going to give it Top Marks to redress the idiotic review from “Durban” “Truly Awful”. He must have stayed somewhere else. In fact, maybe he should, The Pemier Inn.
Ps, thank you Suzanne, for the treat

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pig is a bang up to date take on a new style of home grown, 26 bedroom country house hotel and what that needs to be today - original, relaxed and sitting comfortably within its environment. It's really a restaurant with rooms. This is a place that is all about the walled garden and everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef - they grow and find the food - the chef then makes the menu. The style is home grown in every way - breaking the mold of designed hotels, daring to be comfortable in its own skin, working with what it has and recognising what is good about that. It won't be perfect, it will be warm, relaxed, comfy, interesting, and homely with muted colours, a bit shabby chic and evolved rather than interior designed. ... more   less
