I visited The Old Vicarage for a family friend's wedding. The venue is lovely and despite being on the main A35 and near the railway line, there is no inkling that you are so close to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It feels as if you are in the middle of the countryside.
We were especially taken with how well the staff catered for our children's food allergies. The main food event of the daytime was Afternoon Tea. Given that my son has a serious milk allergy, this is a very daunting prospect at the best of times, even more so when you don't want to spoil someone's Big Day! We called the venue a few hours before the ceremony to double check that the organisers had informed the caterers (they had). When we arrived, we parked in the "field" and walked the short distance through the gardens to the Old Vicarage, where we asked to speak to Tom. He ran through things discreetly and reassured us that everything was in hand. At the Afternoon Tea, we were served with scones, sandwiches, cakes, tea / coffee and cookies / biscuits. As Tom knew where we were sitting, he made sure that the food in front of us was safe for our children (almond milk scones, specially made sandwiches, free from cakes, etc). All this was carried out with so much discretion that the people next to us didn't even realise that our food was different. It's just a shame that they only do special events, not everyday dining, as we'd probably end up eating here every week!
