We chose this pub as it received a high proportion of good reviews. Unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations. The restaurant was clean but had little atmosphere and the food was very mixed. The roast beef and lamb was good, however the starters of nachos (swamped in a cheese sauce which tasted like it had been made from powder) and the special fish platter (tasteless and seemingly straight out of a tin or freezer) were terrible. The steak was tough and sinewy and the gammon tough and salty. The Eton Mess pud was good and landlady, Pauline, was very friendly. Sorry we can't recommend though.

We chose the Rose and Crown as it was close to our accommodation - only 5 minutes drive. However we dined there on a Saturday night at 7 pm, and the pub was busy. The barman did, however, say he could fit us in, as there was one table left. We ordered our food at 7.10 pm and drank wine while we waited... and waited, and waited. After an hour and a bit, (most of our wine finished by now!) we were finally hoping our food might eventually arrive next - as the other tables had been served - except one table who had ordered after us in the queue at 7.10. But no - this other table got their food before us, so my wife was extremely put out by this - it seems like poor order management to say the least. We got up at around 8.30 to ask for a refund and leave, went to the bar to cancel our order. But then the waitress asked if she could check something, and came back saying they were just plating up now, would we stay? We said we would appreciate some compensation and an free bottle of wine was agreed. But who wants all the hassle when we simply wanted a single main course meal for 3? When our meals arrived, the food was good quality pub fare - I did like the succulent and tasty meat in the home-made pie; and the portions were very generous - doggy bag needed. But I honestly can say this was the longest I have ever waited in a restaurant anywhere for a simple single course order. And living in Scotland I have had a few twenty, thirty and even forty minute waits in the past, not great. So my advice would be - don't go if they are busy unless you are happy to wait! Such an excessively long wait for food - and then the aggravation of going to cancel, potentially waste the food, and leave unhappy, risks the whole experience clearly putting customers off. No-one wins in this situation.

I think when you read the following you might give this place a miss to.
My wife and I don't manage to get out very often for a night out, what with 3 kids, last time being before Christmas. So when we where at there Nana's for a few days we managed to get a free pass. I booked a table at the Crown for 8pm Wed 9th, in the afternoon to be assured a reservation. We turned up at 7:30pm and got a pint and sat outside as we were early. At 7:50pm we popped inside to take our table and we're told that the kitchen was very busy and it would at least 30min before they could take our order. Not a problem we said and asked to get another drink, and would it be okay to sit outside and wait. No problem, drinks went on the tables tab. At 8:20pm we headed back inside and sat down. As the staff were busy I went to the bar to order our food. The bartender then suddenly disappeared to the kitchen, strange. When she came back she proclaimed the kitchen was shut and wouldn't be serving us!!! WTF? We had reserved a table, waited without fuss (as asked) and now we were refused service. Annoyed would be putting it politely, our first night out in nearly a year was completely ruined by there incompetence. The kitchen staff didn't even have the 'balls' to come out and explain themselves either, leaving the poor bartender to get the stick.
We'll be avoiding this place in the future, and so should you. There are other places in the area that are more pleasant to there customers than these lot.

Stopped on our way back to Lakeland holiday park for a meal after a lovely day out on lake windermere. The food was amazing we all had a different meal from the specials board and each one was excellent. I had baked cod with lobster and prawns in a sauce new pots and fresh veg never expected to find such extra special food in such a small village and with such a small price tag. Landlady was lovely and welcomed the children warmly even though they where very tired. We had some staropramen lager which was lovely well done to all the team of the rose and crown. Anybody travelling to this holiday camp needs to try it as the food is pricey and only ok on site its about a mile walk.
