“Christmas Break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2011

We are just back from the Christmas holiday at the Cumbria Grand Hotel and enjoyed our time in this old-world hotel. It really is old-world having been built in the 1880's and it still have a Victorian theatre in the basement!
One can imagine the dining room when people dressed in white-tie-and-tales for dinner,
Now there is no dress code and only a handful of visitors bother to appear properly dressed in the evening.
The menus have changed too. It is a self-service breakfast with lunch and dinner partly buffet style. The food is plain but well cooked with more than ample portions. The staff are young and mainly foreign workers with the excellent head waiter, Thomas from Hungary, in charge of the dining room ensuring that nothing was a problem!
The bedrooms are small but comfortable with modern bathrooms, tv, tea and cofee making facilities.
Live music was provided for each of the four evenings we stayed at the hotel and there is a full programme of entertainment.
Many of the guests have been coming back to this hotel for Christmas for up to five years and bring family with them. It is disappointing that the management fails to take note of this and they might wish to consider a Welcome Party for their regular guests.
Our only disappointment was check-out where the Reception staff failed to ask if we had enjoyerd our stay and would we be coming back again next year?

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking Morecambe Bay have the best views, but all are equally well furnished. Free wifi...

Visited the cumbria grand in December for one of their murder weekends.

After reading some of the reviews on this site I have to say that I was a little apprehensive as some of them are far from complimentary. The reallity however was miles from the depressing, dirty picture portrayed by some people.

We arrived mid afternoon on a very cold day to be met by a very friendly face at reception who processed our checkin very quickly; all our pre-arrival requests had been met (my parents are both in there 80's so a ground floor room was asked for). The rooms were all very clean and pleasent and the views, even from the ground floor, were fantastic.

All in all, for the money that we paid (£109 for 2 nights half board plus the murder entertainment) I think that this was a superb package. Yes the hotel could do with a lick of paint here and there, but it is an old property that is kept neat, tidy and clean and that retains a great atmosphere of faded victorian charm with many original features such as the original radiators.

All in all you canot knock this place. Great service in a hotel with bags of charm and pretty good food.

In my opinion, anyone that has complained about this hotel must be used to paying FAR FAR ,more for their hotel stays, and are not used to a touch of rustic charm but prefer the boring, antiseptic atmosphere of the new fangled 'Boutique' hotels.

lease stay at this hotel as it is a very big pile that has had to find a nich market in order to remain viable in the modern market place, but the more people stay here the more likely that this fantastic building can be maintained as the vision back to victorian seaside holidays of yesteryear.

We have been going to the murder mystery weekends here for last 8 years and not written a review for it before as I guess I usually rate the murder weekend instead of the hotel but as I was told that there were some bad reviews I thought I would try and give a balanced view. The hotel has, as someone has already pointed out, a faded elegance but most of the public areas are really nice and they have done up the bar area in the last couple of years. Most of the rooms are good that we have been in over the last 8 years anyway, and if you get a bay view its lovely. The food is not michelin starrred but then what do you expect for the price, its better than average and certainly plentiful. The hotel is in a great position for visiting other places in the Lakes and you can use the train and bus (just over the road from hotel) to visit quite a few places. Grange town is small but pleasant (try the pies from the butchers Higginsons) delish. One word of warning check your change at the bar, I was short changed and just thought it was a mistake but later someone in our group mentioned that it had happened a few times whilst he was at the bar, maybe a honest mistake but thought I should just point it out. All in all I think this is a great spot for a weekend away and the murder mystery weekends are always a lot of fun ( thats why people return year after year)

I have stayed at this hotel for several years on the run, whilst attending one of their murder mystery weekends. The hotel has a faded elegance, the dining room and the bar are lovely environments but the bedrooms can vary. If you have a bay facing room, the spectaular view makes up for any problems. I wouldnt stay here if I wasnt with the murder mystery event, but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, with the murder weekends, its a great place to be with your friends, the murder mystery price is very competetive and the weekends are loads of fun and the hotel is packed. Expect to have fun, dont expect 5 star quality and you can't go wrong really. !

Room Tip: Ask for a bay facing room, the view is beautiful.
